Show Social Security Law Now Allows Lump Sum Payments A single lump-sum Social Security Se-curity payment may be made where an insured worker died before September of this year and whore he left no survivor who could be entitled to receive monthly payments. In most cases that lump-sum has been paid to the individual whether a relative or not who paid the burial expenses. In death cases occurring on and after September Septem-ber 1, the lump-sum can be paid even when monthly payments are due to survivors. When no I one is entitled to monthly pay- ments, the lump-sum will be paid on the same basis as under the old law. This change in the law recognizes recog-nizes the fact that a wage earner's earn-er's dependents need additional income at the time of his death to help meet the additional expenses ex-penses always occurring at that time. Under the new law, the widow or other applicant for monthly payments need to file only one application covering both monthly month-ly benefits and lump-sum award. Under both laws, when entitlement entitle-ment is based upon an individual's individ-ual's payment of the burial expenses, ex-penses, proof of their payment ;must be submitted with the claim, and the claim must be filed within two years of the wage earner's death.
