Show Local tracksters hoping this is the year Editor! note: This is the first of a two-part two-part look at local track and field teams starting with Region 6 foes Bountiful and Woods Cross. By TOM HARALDSEN Clipper Correspondent This could be the year that both the Bountiful Braves and Woods Cross Wildcats not only decide the Region 6 track and field title between be-tween them, but also state. Both a is have a nucleus of athletes could give any 3A school a run for their money. Here's a look at both teams: BOUNTIFUL - Coaches Mike Maxwell and Mitch Wiley have six male athletes who stand the potential poten-tial of garnering plenty of points in both dual and invitational meets. Returning is Phil Tate, the outstanding outstan-ding senior hurdler who will also pick up points in the relays and the pole vault. Also back is senior Lance Palmer, a distance standout ' in the 3200 meters and also the 1600. Jason Peterson will earn the Braves points in the 400, 800, 1600 and 1600 meter relay, and Adam Smith will excel in the 800 and 1600. Bountiful also has outstanding outstan-ding performers in Brad Knoles in the 400 and 800 and WeUs Wilkinson Wilkin-son in the high jump. Added to these top athletes are Brian Wright in the sprints, Chad Blackburn in the 400 and relays. Mark Hansen in the sprints and long jump, Travis Acord in the sprints and long jump, Ryan Dryer in middle distances and Dan Messick in the 3200. If all perform per-form to their top levels, the Braves will be hard to beat. On the girls side is defending state champion high jumper Jenny Gardner, who will also throw the discus for the Lady Braves. Amy and Heidi Westergard will compete in the field events and 800 meters respectively, and Amy Smith is a double threat in the javelin and long jump. Missy Fordsham is back in sprints and hurdles, while Denece Jacobs and Amy Wall will team in the 400 and 800 meters. Joy Munns will also score in the 400 meters and Tonya Wade will be the top hurdler. The Braves arc also blessed with seniors Carolyn Doxey and Elizabeth Mabey in the distance races, the 1600 and 3200. In this division as well. Woods Cross and the Braves should battle it out for region honors. WOODS CROSS - Coach Marv Magalei and his assistants have an outstanding group of athletes on both sides as well. Leading the Wildcat attack are Pete McConkie and Beau Etling in the hurdles, with McConkie being perhaps the finest hurdler in Utah. Etling will also be tough to beat in the discus and javelin, and McConkie Mc-Conkie is an integral part of the relay teams which will be among the Wildcats' specialties this season. Bryan Ashby will excel in the sprints and on relay teams, Dave Marx and Andrew Scivally will be top distance runners and on relays, and that nucleus alone cou'd give the Wildcats plenty of points in region and state competitions. Added to them will be Craig Erickson and John Hall in the hurdles, sprinters Brian f-ace, Jeremy Eggett and Ryan Bor-rowman; Bor-rowman; Brandon Allen in the 400 and in relays, Rob Casper in the discus, Jeremy Manning in the long jump, and the high jump trio of Paul Hatch, Tyler Allred and Dave McBride. The 'Cats have plenty of other fine athletes backing up these standouts as well, making die April 29th dual meet between Woods Cross and Bountiful at Bountiful very interesting indeed. The Lady Wildcats are a combination com-bination of speed and toughness as well. Top performers include sprinters Michelle Devey and Natalie Anderson in the 100 and 200 meters, plus the relay teams; Angie Cook, Andrea Root, Stacy Haraldsen, Tracey Clark and Jennifer Jen-nifer Gerber in the hurdles; Celeste Smith in the 400 and 800, Jenny Heap in the 400, 800 and distance races; Allison Goodrich in the 800; Kandi S. Savage in the 800 and high jump; Heidi Selin in the distance races, and Melissa Trin-naman Trin-naman and Patrice Newland in sprints and on relays. Both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams may be among the best in Utah. , In field events, the Wildcats will turn to Meridee Nielsen in the shot, discus and javelin; Amy Pascoe in the shot and discus, Ester Haws in the high jump and long jump and Marci Thomas in the long jump. All in all, this should be a very interesting in-teresting and successful track and field season for both Region 6 teams from Davis County. |
