(Clipper photo by Roger Tuttle) Vikes outlast Weber 3-2 in extra innings By BRET GALLACHER Sports Writer BOUNTIFUL After a convincing 8-2 victory Tuesday over Bonneville, Viewmont needed extra innings Friday to escape with a win over Weber 3-2. A clutch performance both on the mound and at the plate by Viewmont's Jeff Garff ensured the victory. Garff, who is a sophomore, pitched two innings of hit less ball in relief, as well as connecting on the game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth to drive in Rob Eyre and end the contest. "Jeffs a good kid," said Viewmont coach Roger Fam-sworth. Fam-sworth. "He throws hard and has good mechanics, so you can see he's been taught well somewhere down the line." The game started off rough for the Vikes as Matt Dixon drove in Travis Zaremba in the opening inning to give the Warriors a quick 1-0 lead. Viewmont was able to tie the score in the second when Brad Evans blasted a long double to score Br en don Green from second se-cond base. Weber capitalized on a wild pitch in the third inning to recapture recap-ture the lead 2-1, which would hold up until the fifth when the Vikes Mike Brandt connected on a single which saw Brad Evans cross the plate and knot the score. Things looked bad for Viewmont View-mont in the sixth inning when Lance Jar dine ripped a triple in the gap with just one out. It appeared ap-peared the Warriors had starting pitcher Rob Eyre's number when the next batter hit a long drive into right field. A nice defensive r play by Brad Evans, which included in-cluded a perfect throw back to the infield, held Jardine at third. The Vikes, however, turned the game over to Garff, who quickly registered the final out of the inning. The bats remained stagnant for Viewmont in the sixth and seventh, but Garff kept the Warriors War-riors at bay when he struck out the side in the top of the seventh, and only faced three batters in the eighth as well. The bottom of the eighth found the Vikes being set up for the victory with two walks and a wild pitch which advanced the base runners. Garff connected on a hard drive between first and second, and the celebration began. "We have a pretty old team," said Famsworth. "We just don't have much varsity experience. We only returned one starter from last year's team, so a lot of I these kids are just now starting I to play varsity ball. ' ' The victory moves Viewmont to 5-2 overall, and 2-0 in region Py.
