Show Fortunes improving for local girl tennis teams open region play Thursday against Highland. Information on Viewmont High was not available at press time Tuesday. By PATTI AUER Davis County Schools have never nev-er been known as girls' tennis powerhouses. pow-erhouses. None have ever won a state title and it's been years since one claimed a region crown. That distinction belongs to schools such as Brighton, Highland and East. But this season, say area coaches, could be different. High-J High-J land or East will probably still win the Region Four title, but it won't be as easy as it was in years past. Woods Cross looks to be the strongest of the area schools, returning re-turning everyone from last year's team, including top player Anissa Robinson. Robinson placed third in region last year and qualified for state as a sophomore. The junior has played tennis year-round, competing in local and national tournaments. The U.S. Open is on her list of tournaments. She and her father made it to the semi-finals of the father-daughter division. Coach Craig Glover will look to juniors Holly Webb and Sherri Van Alfen to fill the other singles' spots. Doubles teams will be Shawna Murry and Kim Keller and twins Marcey and Mindy Sonntag. "We should do well, we have-experience. have-experience. Highland and East are usually tops in our region, but I think we will be able to beat the schools out here," Glover predicted. pre-dicted. Glover will know if his team can compete with Viewmont after Thursday, when Woods Cross takes on the Vikings. Davis High Coach Jodi De Rouchey is excited about her team's potential, but she is also a realist, recognizing the power of j Highland and East. "We look excellent, but the best we can do is third," she said. "My number one doubles has been to state. My number one singles is strong, but lacks experience." That number one doubles team is the senior duo of Amy Bell and Amy Markison. Playing number one singles is sophomore Julie Nar-rett. Nar-rett. Number two and number three singles will be seniors Kristie Jones and Sara Watkfns. The second doubles team consists of Amy Jensen and Michelle Fowler. Bountiful High lacks one important impor-tant ingredient necessary for winning win-ning a region title experience. Coach Jack Senninger singles' spots are filled with sophomores. "It's young, it needs a little work," he said of his lineup. "They are strong but lack knowledge know-ledge and experience. There is a difference between individual and team tennis."
