Braves drop Roy Wildcats upset Mountain Crest, 2144 By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor Woods Cross remained unbeaten un-beaten and Bountiful found the win column in a pair of somewhat sur prising victories Friday. WOODS CROSS 21 MOUNTAIN MOUN-TAIN CREST 14 In Hyrum, the defending 3-A state champs and top-ranked Mustangs Mus-tangs ran into an inspired Woods Cross defense that picked off three passes and converted each into a score. For the second straight week, the 'Cats built a 21-0 lead.then let the defense prevail to earn a win. Woods Cross is now 3-0 and has to be considered a serious contender , for the region championship. Ryan Arbon set up the first score with an interception and 25-yard return in the first period. Even after af-ter a holding penalty, the Wildcats drove for the score. Quarterback Chad Rawlings connected with Chadd Watson for a 35 yard pass on third down, taking the ball to the Mustang's nine. A procedure penalty pen-alty moved the ball to the four. After Af-ter Watson carried to the one, Rawlings dove in for the score. Dave Simon's PAT made it 7-0 with 4:04 in the first quarter. Todd Fuller started the second scoring drive with an interception at the Mustang 45. On second down, Rawlings hit Mike Wright for 14 yards. Watson picked up 18 to the 12. After a two yard gain by . - Watson on first down, Rawlings hit Arbon for a 10 yard score, and Simon's kick made it 14-0 with 5:01 in the half. The Wildcats scored again in the period after Shaun Cullimore picked pick-ed off a third pass from Mustang quarterback Dan Israelson. Rawlings completed six of 11 passes for 110 yards, and rushed for 29. Watson rushed for 47, caught two passes for 60 yards, and Wright caught three for 40 yards. Woods Cross defense prevented a last-second score by Mountain Crest, as Tye Rogers knocked a ball loose from a receiver deep in Wildcat territory with 12 seconds left. Though the Wildcat offense sputtered in the second half, Mountain Crest couldn't come back all the way. The Mustangs made it 21-7 in the first minute of the third period after intercepting a Rawlings pass. Israelson went up top and hit Steve Pond with a 53 yard bomb for the score. Mountain Crest scored again midway through the final quarter. First, Israelson threw a 40-yard pass on third down, then hit Pond for a six yard gain. A personal foul on Woods Cross moved the ball to the 29, from where Pond hauled in catches of 19 and 10 yards, the latter lat-ter for a TD with 5:50 left. Following a fumble recovery, the Mustangs seemed ready to strike again. But Mike Smith knocked down a pass on first down, Fuller made a game-saving BOUNTIFUL 10 ROY 3 At Bountiful, the Braves' defense de-fense put on a goal line stand at the end of the first half, then held off Roy to claim their first victory of the year. Bob Erickson started the scoring for the Braves with a 32 yard field goal that gave Bountiful a 3-0 half-time half-time lead. Roy drove to the one yard line just before the break, but the Braves held them on three straight plays as time ran out, as Mike Bearnson and defensive tackle tack-le Dave Black contributed big plays. , In the third period, Bountiful L drove 80 yards in 10 plays, capped by a seven yard TD run from Bearnson. Erickson's kick made it 10-0. Roy got a field goal of its own, but defense dominated the remainder remain-der of this contest. "Coming home after two road games really helped," coach Larry Wall stated, "but I think playing at night was the big factor. With all the players we have going both ways, the cooler temperatures really made a difference." He praised the play of Bearnson, Black, quarterback Burke Smith, running back Mark Weston and linebacker Koury Andreason. Wall added the Braves are as healthy heal-thy as they've been all year as region re-gion play opens this week. |
