This year, the child development department is offering a complete day care -and pre-school program between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. for infants through age five. Included in the program are some learning activities, snacks and lunches. lun-ches. The cost is comparable to that charged in the private sector. Davis is the second high school to offer a day care and pre-school program. Viewmont started this service three years ago. The philosophy behind a high school day care, according to child development instructor Marie Barber, Bar-ber, is to prepare students so they can work in a day care center when they leave high school. Another 'purpose of the day care is to provide pro-vide these services for employees ithe work place. Several of the Vf ung children attending the day care are children of Davis High School teachers. Mrs. Barber lists some advantages advan-tages to enrolling a child in a school-sponsored day care center. First, the child to adult ratio is very low. There are only 15 children in the Davis child care program. The ratio of adults to children is two to one for infants and four to one for older children. r . ,, Another advantage is the quality of service provided. All students working in the day care center have had one full year of child development develop-ment They are all high school seniors. Part of their learning experience ex-perience is centered around providing pro-viding suitable programs for each individual child. The students learn to assess the needs of the youngsters youngs-ters and to fulfill these needs. Records Re-cords are kept on a day-to-day basis for each child. There are 21 students including four boys working in the Davis child care center. Most come in for one period of 90 minutes per day. The center is located at the rear of the main high school building. There are separate entrances for the children so they have no contact con-tact with the main high school population. Supervising the program is Marie Barber, child development teacher with 15 years teaching experience ex-perience and Joy Carpenter who holds an associate degree in. child care. There are openings in the center for children ages two or above. For more information call Davis High School, 546-7940.
