Show Region football begins By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor With practice games complete, Region Four football opens for real Friday, and indications are that any of five teams could make the state playoffs which begin Oct. 29. Under the rotating playoff format, for-mat, this year four teams from Region Re-gion Four will earn first-round playoff play-off berths. Every team but East has won at least once thus far, and the league may be more balanced this year than it has during the past five seasons. Also, this is the final year for the current alignment. Next fall, Bountiful Boun-tiful and Woods Cross drop down to 3-A, Highland and Viewmont become be-come part of a Salt Lake City-based league, and Davis goes north into a region with Layton and Clearfield. Final bragging rights are on the line this year in all sports. Here's a look at Friday night games that will launch league play: HIGHLAND (2-1) at BOUNTI-FUL BOUNTI-FUL (1-2), 7:30 p.m. The Rams were ranked first in 4-1 after an opening week 20-15 win over Skyline, Sky-line, but a loss to Kearns in week two dropped them out of the top five. Still, Highland is generally considered the team to beat in this region. Bountiful has improved each week, surprising a decent Roy team last Friday for its first , win of the year. But the Braves are still struggling strug-gling somewhat offensively, and it will take a superior effort on the part of Bountiful to upset Highland. Prediction: Highland 20 Bountiful 7. VIEWMONT (1-2) at WOODS CROSS (3-0), 7:30: Before the preseason pre-season began, coaches throughout the region knew Woods Cross would be improved, but few guessed gues-sed they'd be this improved. The Wildcats have looked impressive, particularly defensively. And last week's win over top-ranked 3-A Mountain Crest in Cache Valley showed that the Wildcats are for real. Viewmont has played well in two of its three games, including a 21-6 loss to unbeaten Bonneville last, Friday. The Vikes have the potential poten-tial to go a long way this year. This is a tough contest to call, but until Woods Cross proves otherwise, we'll give the Wildcats the nod. Prediction: Woods Cross 24 Viewmont View-mont 13. EAST (0-3) at DAVIS (2-1), 7:30: The Leopards haven't been competitive com-petitive in this region in years, while Davis once owned it and still has a great chance to win it this season. This game is in Kaysville, where it's always difficult to win, so unless the Darts have a complete breakdown, Davis should prevail. Prediction: Davis 35 East 7. |
