Show Mraive JRLsive By RACHEL MABEY This year at Bountiful High we are making an important change in tradition. This change pertains to singing our national anthem. For the past few years we have yelled "Braves!" at the end of the last line. This has been done in a feeling of school spirit, and just having fun. The thought had not occurred that we were actually showing disrespect to our country, yelling "Braves!" was just the thing to do. We now realize our actions were offensive to some members of the community. The "Star Spangled Banner" was not written exclusively for students stu-dents at Bountiful High. It was written for every citizen of this great country, and all citizens should be able to sing the national anthem with pride, even if they are a Viking at a BHS football game. Our national anthem is a way for us to express our patriotism and respect for our country. I love my country dearly and would never knowingly show her disrespect, and every student at BHS feels the same. From this year forward, BHS students will sing the national anthem with pride: showing respect re-spect for our country, our school, and ourselves. We ask you to please respect our goal, and help us in achieving it. Incidentally, after we have sung the national anthem and played the football game this Friday, don't forget the stomp at 9 p.m. in the old gym. |
