Show Falcons edge Darts, Lancers lose By DONETA GATHERUM CLEARFIELD 24 DAVIS 22 CLEARFIELD An exciting game featuring outstanding running run-ning and kicking saw Clearfield score a two point victory over inter-county rival Davis. Clearfield's first touchdown came early in the first quarter with a 66-yard run up the middle by Dan Huff. This was followed by a successful PAT. Davis quickly countered with a 56 yard run and a sustained drive that ended on a quarterback keep from the one. A successful PAT tied the score. Highlight of the second quarter came when Clearfield's Randy Hicks partially blocked a Davis punt and controlled the ball, running run-ning it into the end zone for Clear-. field's second touchdown. Again, the PAT was good. ( Davis countered with several good running plays but suffered a loss from a holding penalty. The Darts settled for a field goal. Clearfield followed with a field goal, making the score at half time 17-10. Early in the third quarter Davis fnade a touchdown but missed the PAT. Clearfield immediately passed for a first down and got some help from Davis in the form of a 15-yard dead ball penalty, followed by an encroachment penalty. An illegal motion penalty on Clearfield caused cheering in the Dart stands, but it didn't last long. A short pass to Dan Huff put Clearfield on the scoreboard one more time. Davis moved the ball to the seven yard line. A Clearfield face mask penalty gave the Darts half the distance to the goal line and the Darts were able to score. A two point conversion failed. This was Clearfield's first victory vic-tory of the season and the first vic tory for Coach Brent Lund. Davis is now 2-1. HIGHLAND 17 LAYTON 10 Friday's game between the Layton Lancers and the Highland Rams proved one thing: Layton can score. The sad part is that they didn't score enough to beat Highland, High-land, last year's 4-A state champions. cham-pions. ' The Lancers' Chris Henderson1 kicked a first quarter field goal and led by three points early in the first quarter. Highland countered with a touchdown and PAT making the half time score 7-3. A second half touchdown pass from Chris Trujillo to Scott Brimhall followed by the PAT by Chris Henderson gave the Lancers a 10-7 lead. Layton held the Rams until the final 9'2 minutes of the game when Highland tied the score with a Norman Nor-man Rafferty field goal. The winning Highland touchdown touch-down was made with only 4:44 remaining re-maining in the game. Layton fell to 0-3 on the year. |
