Show Bicyclists have made the Frontage Road between Centerville and Farmington a popular route, and the county commission has included the road in its bicycle route pamphlet. But the Centerville Council, citing safety concerns, has. voted not to adopt the route by ordinance, thus failing to give its approval to the county's plan. Bike trail 'dangerous,' says Centerville By TOM HARALDSEN CENTERVILLE City council coun-cil has denied a request from the Davis County Commission for adoption of a resolution on a bicycle bicy-cle route through the city. . Council agreed with a recom-' mendation from city staff that the proposed county route, which has already been published by the county in a pamphlet entitled "Davis County Bicycle Trail iide," is considered a danger and safety hazard to bicyclists. City Police Chief James Oswald, referring to the bike route, said in a letter to city administrator David Hales that "I feel the need to note a definite danger in routing the bicycles bicy-cles along the Frontage Road..." He said the road is not wide enough in some locations, and that "in the past few years the Police Department Depart-ment has investigated two or three bicycle-automobile accidents in the proposed area. The speeds on the road usually average 50-55 miles per hour, as the city grows, there will be an even greater amount of traffic utilizing the Frontage Fron-tage Road from Farmington and Centerville areas to the Parrish Lane on and off ramps." The letter from Chief Oswald also suggested a possible alternate route, from 1600 North in West Bountiful east to 800 West, then north on 800 West to Porters Lane. The Chief said that "at present this is a dirt road in extremely good repair." He said a route along the lake shore would provide good scenery, low traffic and increased safety, adding that the existing trail could then be picked up at Glovers Lane, with bikers exiting towards 1525 West in Farmington. While sustaining the Chiefs objections ob-jections to the current route, the council did not, by motion, take action on the proposed alternate path. It did vote to deny the county's coun-ty's request for approval of the current cur-rent route. |
