Show County Commissioners To Hear Outline of State Defense Plans Dan M. Whelan, regional director of the state of council of defense, will discuss plans for Washington county's participation in state civilian ci-vilian defense with the county commissioners late this week when he arrives from Salt Lake City. Mr. Whelan will explain all organization or-ganization plans of the state council, coun-cil, which operates through and coordinates the work of 29 county councils. The first move in county coun-ty organization will be the appointment ap-pointment of a county coordinator, coordin-ator, through whom work will proceed. He will in turn appoint directors of planning, protection, ncessities, communications and public utilities divisions. All work is a civic service, volunteered and unpaid. The state council of defense was set up in a series of acts by the Utah Legislature in 1941. It provides pro-vides for the recruiting of civilian workers in an organization of volunteers vol-unteers similar to the ARP Air Raid Protection in England, and other similar groups. It is a long-range, long-range, highly important movement to prepare the American public for any emergency which may arise in the present perilous times. Similiar defense organizations have been set up in other states of the union under the general direction, direc-tion, in the United States, of Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia, of New York City, who is president of the National Council of Defense. |
