Show Farmers To Be Asked To Take Active Part In U. S. Defense Program "Every farmer in the United States will be contacted by local farmer committeemen under the supervision of United States Department De-partment of Agriculture Defense boards and will be assisted with individual farm plans to determine the extent to which each farm can contribute to agriculture's task in national defense." With this statement by Claude R. Wickard, secretary of agriculture, agri-culture, Wilford A. Schmutz, chairman chair-man of the Washington county USDA Defense committee, announced an-nounced a production program which will be carried out in the county beginning with a canvass of every farm and ranch in the county. Production goals for 1942 and the part agriculture will be called upon to play in defense were set up in a series of four regional conferences conducted by the secretary sec-retary of agriculture. The first of these conferences was held at Salt Lake City last Monday and Tuesday. Tues-day. At this meeting plans for carrying carry-ing out an intensive campaign on food for defense were drafted. These plans will soon be in the hands of local agricultural defense de-fense committees. Mr. Schmutz pointed out that while farmers and ranchers will be encouraged to increase production produc-tion of such items as milk, eggs, pork and other protective foods, that there will be no slackening up on wheat acreage allotments and allotments of other crops which are being produced as surpluses. sur-pluses.
