Show A Partnership for Freedom (Utah State Press Release) Throughout the nation the week of October 1 to 8 will be observed as National Newspaper Week a time during which the importance of the newspaper to its community, and the importance of newspapers in the aggregate to the state and the nation will be called to public attention. It isn't just a time in which the thousands of newspapers news-papers of America seek to "toot their own horn", rather it is an effort to call the public's attention to the fact that newspapers are an institution of public service an integral in-tegral part of the community which both needs the community com-munity and is needed by the community. Newspapers and their public all too often and too easily grow apart. Newspapers regard their public as customers cus-tomers more than partners. The public regards the news-r news-r paper as a thing of brick and stone, machinery and paper Tather than as a personal friend and servant. Newspaper Aveek is a time in which both newspapers and public can learn to understand each other better. In Utah Governor Herbert B. Maw has urged that Newspaper Week be fittingly observed. He has asked that officials of local governments, civic organizations and the public generally participate in such observance. In his statement, which you will find published elsewhere in this issue of The News, he calls attention to the service performed per-formed by Utah newspapers to their communities and their state and especially emphasizes the importance of public cooperation, support and interest for newspapers at this time when, in a world in which freedom has been so largely extinguished, the American, newspapers are attempting to carry out their responsibility as guardians of American freedom. The News deeply appreciates the Governor's interest inter-est in Newspaper Week and hopes that there will be some public recognition of the week in St. George not just as a tribute to The News as an individual newspaper but rather as a focusing of public attention on the great significance sig-nificance to Ameria of the partnership which exists between be-tween a free people and a free press. |
