Vernal Panthers col lee - second A championship trophy appeared to be a sure thing for the Vernal Panthers in a tournament at Vernal Junior High, Wednesday, Feb. 17 as a 9-0 streak had given the Ijdy Panthers an 11 point lead of 25 to 14 with 2:23 left in the third quarter, but Roosevelt, which had been dead for 6 minutes and 17 seconds in the third quarter, came back to life with a 27 9 bombing that produced a 41 to 34 victory over Vernal. The path to the hoop was easy traveling for the Roosevelt Rough Riders early in the first quarter as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead on two field goals by Cindy Campbell and two-pointers two-pointers by Suzanne Neilsen and Kathy Nelson. Vernal gained its first points of the game when Cindy Anderson connected con-nected on a field goal with 2:14 left in the quarter. Kim Drollinger popped in a free throw and Cami Reed put in a shot to make the score Roosevelt, 8 and Vernal, 5, after one quarter. Vernal didn't waste much time in getting its first points of the second quarter as Tia Liebhardt popped in a shot at the 7:45 mark. The Panthers' Kim Brown missed a free throw, but Liebhardt nabbed it while it was going out of bounds and Fired in to Drollinger for two points. Drollinger was fouled on the play and she ripped the net for a 10-8 Vernal advantage. Liebhardt fired in two field goals and Reed poured in two points to deliver a six point lead of 16-10 to the Panthers. However, Vellie Brown and Neilsen pumped in shots to cut Vernal's lead to two points, 16-14, at the end of the second quarter. The road to the basket became rough for the Rough Riders in the third ' quarter as they went scoreless for 6:17 while Vernal scored nine points for an 11 point lead of 25-14. Liebhardt fired in three two-pointers and Marcie McNeill connected on 3 out of 7 free throws for an 11 point advantage. Roosevelt acquired its first points of the third quarter when Brown fired in a field goal at the 1 :43 mark. The Rough Riders came right back with a field goal by Campbell, but Vernal gained a nine point lead on a two-pointer by Liebhardt. Neilson scored two points to make the score after three quarters, Vernal, 27 and Roosevelt. 20. The Rough Riders scored zero points in six minutes in the third quarter, but they scored eight points in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to take a lead of 28 to 27. Neilsen scored six of the eight points and put in a shot, which gave Roosevelt a 28-27 lead with 5:58 left. Liebhardt darted between two defenders to give the lead back to Vernal at 29-28, but Neilsen popped in a shot for a Roosevelt advantage of 30-29. Vernal turned the ball over, twice and Lisa Freston increased the Roosevelt lead to five points at 34-39 due to two successful free throws. Liebhardt tossed in a field goal to cut Roosevelt's lead to two successful free throws. Leibhardt tossed in a field goal to cut Roosevelt's lead to 34-31, but Neilsen captured a rebound and put the ball through the hoop for a 36-31 lead. Neilsen tossed in another shot for a seven point lead of 38-31. 38-31. Drollinger scored three points on a field goal and free throw to cut Roosevelt's lead to five points at 39-34. but Neilsen, who scored 15 points in the final quarter, put in two more points due to charity tosses and Roosevelt won first place in the tournament with a 41-34 41-34 victory over the Panthers. Vernal placed second. Liebhardt was the top scorer for Vernal at 18 points. She put in nine field goals. Also scoring points for Vernal were Drollinger, 6: Reed. 4; McNeill, 3: Anderson, 2 and Kim Brown, 1. Neilsen was the number one Roosevelt scorer at 23 points. She put in ten field goals and hit 3 out of 6 free throws. Brown and Campbell scored six points. Freston tossed in four points and Nelson scored two points. Vernal fired in 8 out of 19 free throws and Roosevelt hit 7 out of 11. Vernal finished the year with an 11-2 mark. The Panthers Pan-thers defeated Roosevelt, twice, during the regular season. Altamont toppled Duchesne in the first round, 47 to 26 and Roosevelt thumped West, 43-28. Vernal downed Altamont, 48-14 and Roosevelt nipped Canyon View. 33-29. Duchesne captured the consolation title due to a 22-17 win over West. Vernal jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first quarter in the game with Altamont and had a 23 to 7 lead after two quarters. The Panthers had a 43-9 lead at the end of the third quarter and won the game by the score of 48-14. McNeill was the number one Vernal scorer at 18 points and Drollinger scored 13 points. Liebhardt scored ten points and Leah Nielsen scored three points. Cindy Anderson put in two counters and Shellie Beynon and Cindy Allred scored one point each. |
