Show ITKS POUND COUGARS Craig Hammer, the only senior on the University of Utah basketball team, saved it all for his last shot at the Hrigham Young Cougars, and he poured in a personal per-sonal hiRh of 22 counters in leading the Utes to a G8 to 61 WAC victory over the Cougars, Friday. Hammer was the Utes' third highest scorer this year with a 10.5 average, but this has not been a year for heroics on the part of the Utes, who were thumped n few weeks ago by the Cougars in Pro"o, 74-51 . BYU entered the game with a shot nt gaining a post-season tournament bid, but the Utes probably eliminated that with n convincing triumph. The taller, veteran Cougars led only once, nt 6-4 and the score was never tied after George Furgis knotted it nt 6 6 nt 15:21. After that it was nil Utah, although the Cats kept coining back, but never could overcome thai six point deficit after the score had been tied. Utah led by as much ns eight points Hirer times In the first half and the Cougars never closed the gap less Hum four points in the half which ended 30 24. Hammer Imninirrcd Ihe Cougars by popping in 16 of his 22 points in the first half find he pounded Ihe Cats with shots from every angle. BYU had nine turnovers in the first 15 minutes and Utah had only one turnover. Hammer scored 12 of Utah's first 20 points. Utah has seldom handled the ball better this season as they committed only three turnovers in the first half and only four for the whole game. BYU had 14 turnovers for the game. The Utes wouldn't let the Cougars get up, once the tempo had been established and cruised to victory number ten for the season and a 5-7 WAC record. Hammer had 22 points in the game, but three other Utes, Angelo Robinson, 14; Furgis, 12 and Peter Williams, 10, nlso scored in double figures for Utah. BYU fell to 4-11 overall and dropped to a WAC record of 6 6. Fred Roberts was the top Cougar scorer at 21 points and Sieve TrumlH), who scored two baskets in the final six minutes of the game, put in 13 points. With the game under control, Utah slowed the tempo. Willi 14:27 left lo play, Utah had taken only 43 shots from Ihe field and when the game was over thelites had taken only 50 shots from Ihe field.
