Show 4 V-'s - ! Bishop William Weigand will host the Lenten Convocation at the University of Utah. Catholics to gather at U of U for service Catholics of Utah will gather in convocation con-vocation and prayer at the University of Utah Special Events Center as they begin the season of Lent on Sunday, Feb. 28. The Convocation, the theme, "Gathered in His Name," or "Reunidos in Su Nombre" will begin with a 9:30 a.m. English session, including a prayer service and a presentation by Father John Bertolucci of the Diocese of Albany. During the bi-lingual Mass at 12:30 p.m.. Bishop William K. Weigand will celebrate the "Rite of Election." According Accor-ding lo Rev. Robert Bussen, pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas church in Logan, who is coordinating plans for the Rite, this is the first time Utah Catholics will participate in and witness such a Rite. In the Rite of Election, Father Bussen explains, "the Church chooses among its adults preparing for Baptism, those who seem ready. The ancient rite, with roots back to the second century, acknowledges that Baptism is a gift of the Church freely bestowed on those it chooses." Approximately one hundred adult l lahns are now preparing to be baptized baptiz-ed and received into the Catholic Church. Chur-ch. Each is sponsored by a member of , Jhe Church and is involved in special in-, in-, struclion. During the Rite of Election, n they, will be presented to Bishop ' .r Weigand. Most will be baptized at Easier and the Lenten weeks prior to their Baptism will be a time for personal per-sonal and community prayer to be sure that all is in readiness. The Convocation will conclude with a :l p.m. Spanish session, with Archbishop Roberto F. Sanchez of Sante Fe and Sister Margarita Jimenez of Orange. Calif , speaking. Bishop Weigand has urged all Utah Catholics to plan to participate in this very special day of prayer on the first Sunday til Lent, pointing out that 'Gathered in His Name," we will celebrate our gilt of faith and oneness as his people. |
