Vernal girl cE3s ftfauroip' Vernal Junior High's girl hoopsters opened the 1979-80 season with a 27 to 25 win over the Rough Riders in Roosevelt, Thursday and a 21 to 14 win over Green River, Wyoming, in Vernal, Friday. Green River had a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Vernal outscored Green River, 5-0 in the second se-cond quarter. They came from behind with five points by Michelle Green for an 8 to 4 lead at the end of the first half. Mauri Green connected on a field goal early in the third quarter to give the Panthers a 10-4 lead, but Green River put in a two pointer to cut Ver-nal's Ver-nal's lead to 10 to 6. Two field goals by Michelle Green delivered a 14 to 6 lead for Vernal. Deah Bennion flipped in two points for Vernal for a lead of 16 to 8, but Green River fired in two field goals to make the score at the end of the third quarter, Vernal, 16 and Green River 12. Vernal put in the first five points of the fourth quarter as twin sisters, Mauri and Michelle Green popped in field goals and Chris Blaisure converted con-verted one free throw for a 21 to 12 Vernal Ver-nal lead. Green River scored its first points of the quarter on a successful field goal try with less than two minutes remaining. The final score was: Vernal, Ver-nal, 21 and Green River, 14. Michelle Green was the top scorer in the game for Vernal with 13 points. Mauri Green tossed in four counters and Deah Bennion scored two points. Joan Hacking and Chris Blaisure flipped flip-ped in one point each. Tia Liebhardt connected on two free throws with less than a minute left in ' the game to enable the Vernal Panthers to topple the Rough Riders in Roosevelt, Thursday, 27 to 25. Roosevelt had a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, but they were blanked in the second quarter, 4-0, and Vernal nabbed a 13 to 10 advantage. The Rough Riders outscored the Panthers, 8 to 4, in the third quarter for an 18 to 17 lead.
