Show THE UTES' 105 pounders, Monte Morris and Ron Horrocks, right, garnered first places in wrestling tournaments last week. Morris placed first in the Steamboat Spring Tournament and Horrocks earned top honors in the Vallev Tour nament at Union High School. Uintah captured first place in both tournaments and the Utes' win in the Steamboat Springs Tournament was their fifth in a row. UJfl. nnio'u'irirDeirD gironeir Sfllfa sirwn) Sou irw The Uintah Ute matmen captured their sixth and fifth Steamboat Springs Tournament in a row when they toppled Meeker, Colorado, 193 to 165, Saturday for first place. Uintah is the defending 3-A state champion Utah and Meeker placed first in the state meet in Colorado Col-orado last year. Following Uintah in the team standings were: Laramie, Wyoming, Wyom-ing, third, 73'2; Palisade, fourth, 67; Steamboat Springs, fifth, 66' Craig, sixth, 64; Fruita, seventh, 54 and Rangely, eighth, 52'2. Uintah advanced eight men in the finals, and Monte Morris, 105; Matt Hacking, 138; Raymond Perry, 155 and Ken Cobbs, unlimited, nabbed first places. Josh Reynolds, 98; Rick Huber, 119; Cory McNeill, 126 and Randy Smuin, 145; placed second. Allen Huber, 132; Billy Bedell, 167 and Art Daley, 185 nabbed third places. Monte Morris blanked Steamboat Springs, Barber, 8-4, for first place at 105 pounds. Morris blanked Nelson, Laramie, 9-0 and shutout Thomas of Fruita, 6-0. Matt Hacking thumped Gonzales of Laramie, 11-2, for first place in the 138 pound class. Hacking pinned Revelle of Craig and Bosch of Palisade. Raymond Perry toppled Tony Seeley of Meeker, 6-3, for the 155 pound crown. Perry pinned Tullio of Rangely and thumped Jameson, Fruita, 17-9. Ken Cobbs captured the unlimited crown when he pinned Wilzcek of Rangely. He also pinned Volochin of Craig. Josh Reynolds, 98, blanked Schmaltz of Fruita, 7-0 and edged Steamboat Springs', Spr-ings', Barber, 2-1. Meeker's Raundrich nipped Reynolds, 4-3, for first place. . Rick Huber, 119, thumped Veeder, Craig, 12-0 and downed Bikk, Palisade, 9-3. Huber was edged by Tad Sullivan of Meeker, 5-3, for first place. Cory McNeill, 126, pinned Schultz of Craig and Crawford of Meeker. Frank Woodburn, Palisade, pinned McNeill in the championship match. Sophomore, Randy Smuin, 145, pinned Kelton of Steamboat Springs and bombed Kowach of Craig, 14-2. Buesher of Laramie downed Smuin, 8-2, for first place. Allen Huber, 132, was thumped by Anderson of Rangely in the first round, 8-3, but he won three matches in a row over Denton, Fruita; Kris, Laramie and Anderson, 6-5, for third place. Kai Turner of Meeker pinned Talbott of Palisade for first place. Billy Bedell, 167, thumped Pelle of Laramie, 20-3, in the first round, but was pinned by Adams of Steamboat Springs in the second round. Bedell toppled top-pled McClellan of Craig, 14-2 and pinned pinn-ed Fruita 's Doyal for third place. Tony Mazzola of Meeker blanked Adams, 7-0 for first place. Art Daley, 185, pinned his first round opponent, but he was dropped for a fall by Bosh of Laramie in the second round. Daley pinned Palisade's Thate and dropped Smith of Craig for a fall in the third place battle. Foston Chivers was downed by Willie Rael of Meeker, 13-7 in the first round and then w as knocked out of the tourney due to a loss to Gonzales. Rael toppled Norman Look of Steamboat Springs due to a referee decision in overtime. "Chivers pulled 11 pounds in three days in order to wrestle in the 112 pound class." stated Uintah wrestling coach. Chuck Henry. . "Uintah wrestled well in the Steamboat Steam-boat Springs Tournament. Meeker was minus two weights. 105 and unlimited. The win is our fifth Steamboat Springs Tournament title in a row. I thought the kids wrestled well with only two weeks of practice," said Henry. "We made some mistakes, but it will help us in the next couple of weeks. We expected Meeker to be tough. We will battle Meeker in the Rock Springs Tourna- , ment, December 14-15 and in a dual meet in January." The Utes will take on Grand Junction Central, Wednesday. December 12 at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p m Grand Junction nabbed nab-bed the state title in 1978 and last year their first six weights on their varsity team consisted of sophomores. "They have a good 185 pounder in Gary Beudaris," said Henry. Uintah will battle Tooele on the road in the first Region Seven meet of the year for Utes. The Uintah Utes will host Steamboat Springs, December 22 and the Uintah Tournament is set for December 29. Uintah's second team will take part in the Uintah Tournament. Tourna-ment. Uintah will host Nampa, the Idaho State Champions, January 3 and the Vernal Tournament is set for Januray 4 and 5. r .
