The Uintah team will battle the Pioneers in Lehi, Friday and will host Union, Saturday. ' Arch-rivcnls, UiBitfejh Uves and Union CoygafG bavle E.vurday The Uintah Utes will entertain their arch-rival, the Union High School Cougars, Saturday in Vernal at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. "We are going after Union because Uintah has a lot to prove since Union kept the Utes from going to the state tournament last year when they beat Uintah in a playoff," stated Uintah Coach, Ron Moore. Union was in the 3-A class with Uintah last year, but the Cougars returned to the 2-A class this season. The Cougars have a 0-3 record due to lasses to Payson, Carbon, 52-50 and Spanish Fork. Uintah has a 0-1 record because of an 82-59 setback to Sky View in Smithfield, Saturday . Sky View is one of the top 4-A clubs in the state of Utah. Sky View jumped out to a 22-7 lead in the first quarter, and had a 47 to 22 advantage after two quarters of action. Uintah outscored Sky View, 22 to 14, in the third quarter to cut Sky View's lead to 64 to 44. The final score was: Sky View, 82 and Uintah, 59. The top scorer in the game for Uintah was Burke Buckalew with 18 points. Brent Labrum tossed in 11 points and Hon Ellis scored 10 counters, also scoring points were: Clark McClellan, 7; Derrin Gardiner, 4; Joe Gardiner, 4; Ron Gardner, 2; David Stone, 2 and Marty McCarrel, 1. Eddie Benson and Jon McKenna of Sky View were the top point gainers in the game with 26 point each. Also scoring counters were Rand Hendricks, Hen-dricks, 10; Jay Bair, 7; Dee Barrett, 6; Robert Webb, 3; Jon Thomas, 2 and Rich Crosby, 2. Uintah hit 21 out of 58 field goals for 36 percent, and Sky View connected on 34 out of 53 field goal attempts for 64 percent. Uintah tossed in 17 out of 33 free throws for 52 percent, and Sky View hit 14 out of 20 for 70 percent. Free throw marks for Uintah were: Buckalew, 8-12; D. Gardiner, 0-3; R. Gardner, 0-1; Ellis, 0-3; Labrum, 3-4; McClellan, 3-4; J. Gardiner, 0-1; McCarrel, Mc-Carrel, 1-3 and Stone, 2-2. "We feel positive about the game. The Uintah athletes were really tense. We had a lot of shots, but we didn't run our offense. We weren't patient in the balL game. Sky View isn't 23 points better than Uintah," state Moore. The Utes will battle the Pioneers in Lehi, Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. "Lehi is a small team, with a lot of speed. Brent Labrum did a good job in the second half of the game with Sky View. He was 4 for 6 from the field and 3 for 4 from the foul line," said Moore. "Clark McClellan played a good ball game and Ron Ellis had 14 rebounds and five field goals. Burke Buckalew was our leading scorer at 18 points. He hit 8 out of 12 from the foul line and connected on 5 out of 11 field goal attempts." Uintah will take part in the Box Elder Tournament in Brigham City, December 13-15 and will host Grand Junction, December 20. Uintah will battle Union in Roosevelt, December 28 and will invade Wyoming for a game with Green River, December 29. |
