Show JEWISH NATION. A Jewish commonwealth in Palestine is advocated by the A mcrican Jewish congress now in session in Philadelphia. It is proposed that tho new commonwealth common-wealth bo under tho trusteeship of Great Britain, acting on behalf of such a league of nations as may be formed. The fate of Palestine is to be -decided at the peace conference, and as it is certain that "Bible lands" will not bo returned to tho sovereignty of the Turks, it is quite possible that the Jews may enter into possession of Palestine. In fact, we look forward to the time whon not only the Jews but the Syrians, Armenian's, Persians and Arabs will be made secure In their ancient dwelling places. For many centuries these countries coun-tries have been groaning under tho tyranny of the sultan, but, as a now day is dawning upon the world, all the downtrodden and oppressed peoples should be given a place in the sun and their growth fostered by the , United' States and the .leading powers of Europe. Eu-rope. In past ages it was the custom for the strong nations fo devour the weak, and ywars of aggression followed each other in quick succession. It was on this account that the civilization of tho east was wrecked. We live in what promises to be a more righteous age, and, if all turns out wcdl at Versailles, a helping hand will be extended to the weaker countries in the -future. Ye have always been inclined to the -opinion that sooner or later the "cradle of civilization" would be restored, and if this be one of the results of the great war tho world will, be gainer thereby. Thore is no means of knowing what action will b'e taken "at the peace conference, con-ference, but it is certain that the claim of the Jews to Palestine will be considered. |
