Show LIB CLAMPED 01 ELY'S WINE ROOMS Grand Jury Request Results in Suppression of City's Drinking Places. Special to The Tribune. ELY, Nev., March 23. The grand jury, which has been in session here since the early part of the month, today to-day submitted a partial report to Judge 0. J. McFadden in the district court and was excused. The body will be again called in. session late in May or early in June. The grand jury points out that during dur-ing the early part of its work it was discovered that certain wine rooms were open in Ely. A request was made that the mayor and city council revoke one saloon license, but later this request re-quest was withdrawn upon the condition condi-tion that the city authorities agree to enforce the ordinance with respect to wine rooms and see that they were kept closed in future. Assurance as to this was immediately forthcoming and wine rooms are a thing of the past in Ely. The gTand jury recommends an addition addi-tion to the county hospital. It condemns con-demns a practice which is said to have existed in Ely of serving punch containing con-taining alcoholic liquors at public dances and parents are requested to I be guarded in the matter lest children 1 attending such dances acquire the liquor habit. A further recommendation recommenda-tion is made that greater attention be given to the cleaning of the streets and enforcement of the ordinance with relation re-lation to the disposition of rubbish. The grand jury says that by this many fires may be prevented. An investigation investi-gation was made as to the compliance with the eight-hour law and the grand jurv reports that it has every reason to believe that this matter win be regulated regu-lated upon a satisfactory basis. By the reports of the various committees appointed ap-pointed to investigate affairs in general a very satisfactory condition seems to appear ?o far as the conduct of the county and city governments is concerned con-cerned and officers are highly commended. |
