Show HALF MONTH'S WAR OF BRITISH ON THE SOMME IS REVIEWED PARIS, Aug. 1. The net result of the1 British offensive on the river Somme from the lt to the T.Mh of July was stated officially today to lie that the' whole first Gcrma-u position between Ovillers and Manlauban and tbe greater part of the second German position fell into English hands. Seven villages were retaken and 12,000 officers and men were made prisoner. The military material seized included thirty-five field guns, a naval gun. an anti-atrcraft gun, several large howitzers and an enormous quantity of machine guns, trench cannon and munitions. mu-nitions. Twenty-one enemy aeroplanes were brought down beyond question. A dozen were seen falling head downwards to earth. The German losses in men, the statement state-ment says, must have been serious. The Germans have had to call numerous reserves re-serves and have brought ,to the Somme front within the period designated twelve divisions which were reposing in other sectors. The average loss is consequently estimated at about one division daily. |
