OCR Text	Show SUBMARINE FIGHT WITH BRITISH BOAT IS UNSUCCESSFUL MONTREAL, Aug. 1. The British steamer Clodmoor, just In port from Genoa. Ge-noa. Italy, had a battle In the Mediterranean Mediter-ranean sea with a German or Austrian submarine, her commander, Charles Hunter, reported today. He believes he left the submarine in a sinking condition. The Clodmoor plainly showed the marks' of the submarine's gun II re. The steamship steam-ship Is armed with one gun for defensive purposes, and It was with this, her cap- tain said, that he shelled the submarine , when she attacked, anrl so seriously dam- I aged her that she drew oft in apparently a sinking condition. The battle lasted half an hour, according accord-ing to Captain Hunter, but only one shell did serious damage to the Clodmoor. This Die. ed the vessel near the engineers' and mates' quarters. Several shells, however, dropped on the vessel's decks.
