Show CORNELL MS FIRST HONORS II 1 IET ' Piles Up 45 Points Against Yale's 29; One World's Record Broken; Meredith Mere-dith Star. CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 27. Cornell won the intercollegiate track and field ' championship in the Harvard stadium hero this afternoon, for the third consecutive consecu-tive year, with one of the most evenly balanced athletic combinations that Trainer Jack Moakley has uncovered In many seasons. The Ithaca university athletes piled up a total of 45 points to Yale's 29, while the two Paclric "coast universities, Stanford and California, tied for third place with 22 points each, after crossing the continent to give an exhibition exhibi-tion of the type of collegiate performers developed in their state. The ability of the Callfornians is attested at-tested bv the fact that, with small squads, they outranked Pennsylvania, which scored IS points ; Dartmouth, with 14; Michigan, with 3; Harvard, with 11, and Princeton, with 10: Bowdoin, 5; Syracuse, 3; Penn State, 2; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1. The victory of the Cornell team was far more impressive than a year ago, when the Red and White athletes won by a score 01 one-half point greater, fo the field of entrants today was the best that ever has assembled to compete for I. C. A. A, A. A. titles. So keen was the struggle strug-gle for points that two intercollegiate records rec-ords and one world's record were supplanted sup-planted during the battles of speed upon the fast Harvard track. Meredith Big Star. Captain J. E. (Ted) Meredith of the Pennsvlvania team was the individual hero. The famous Olympic, national and intercollegiate champion closed his track career as a collegian by winning the 4-10-vard dash In -IT 2-5 seconds, which is a new world's record around a turn. The previous time, made bv M. W. (Maxey) Long at Travers Island. N. T., September Septem-ber 2! V.'OO. was 47 seconds. Meredith Mere-dith was only two-lift hs of a second behind be-hind Doner's record of -17 seconds flat on a straisht-away course. About an hour later Meredith raced home tlrsi in the half-mile i-un. winning from a sterling group In 1:53. which was two-fifth of a second faster than the in-terco'dcyiate in-terco'dcyiate record made by D. S. Cald-" Cald-" r cornel! on the same track two years ago. i 'ai;,,:i . ;i F. S. Murray of Stanford fairly (lew over t lie high hurdles, winning t be ICO-yard event in 15 seconds flat, thus .lipping oiic-liflh of a second from the former rei-ord made hv A. B. Shaw of Dartmouth in I'.KH). 'Die Stanford star made the same time in his trial befit yesterday, yes-terday, but a record was not allowed on (Continued on Following Page.) Today To-day Murray was cheered for full a minute min-ute and the Cornell contingent in the stands gave him the nine "Rahs" of the Ithaca university uith his name tacked on the end. Foss oGes High. Cornell nearly went into the record-breaking record-breaking class it pelf, for F. K.- Foss. after winning the poln vault with 12 feet fi inches, tried for 13 feet 2 inches. On hin third attempt he cleared the bar only to knock it off with liia elbow. The victory of Foss in the pole vault yielded one of the three firat places won hy Cornell, but the saining of seconds, thirds, fourths, and even fifths, was the secret of their team honors. Moakley's entrants were entirely eliminated in the 2-0 hurdles and the broad jump, but in ali other events they counted somewhere among the first five. The real class of the. Ithaca runners was demonstrated in the two-mile run when they took the first four places. Up to that stagre, the other competing institutions insti-tutions were within striking distance of Cornell. Half acre of Mnesachitseets Institute Insti-tute of Technology set t lie pace for the Pst mile, and then t lie Cornell group began be-gan to move np to the front. IToffmire, last year's winner, and Fotter were shoulder to shoulder at the mile and a half mark. Hero Potter went into the lead, with Hoffmire second. Frey passed the fast -tiring H?.lfnre on the back stretch, and Corwith, by a garnet spurt, .lust nosed Putmmi of Yale out of fourth place. Windnagle Fast. TVjndnagle adde his name to those of Foss and Potter as Cornell winners in the mile run. He ran a heady race, taking the lead from Overton of Yale, after the latter had set the pace for three-quarter? of the distance. Windnagle won by fifteen fif-teen yards in 4:15, within three-fifths of a second of the record, made by J. P. Jones two years ago. Windnagle's spurt carried Carroll of Michigan Into second place, while Over- 1 ton, by a game effort, held third position, at the finish. j Meredith's great quarter and half-mile ; rocea were due to the pace hp was forced '. to set from the very start in order to hold . the lead. lnthe quarter-mile, he quickly j overhauled "U'ilcox of Harvard after a poor start, but the Crimson sprinter stuck grimly at his shoulder until he was ' shaken off in the stretch, so tired that I Riley of Dartmouth and Crim of Cornell I passed him and won second and third j places, respectively. In the haff-mile. Floto of Princeton and I Bingham of Harvard pressed the Perm- I sylvan'a star from the start, and al- I though Floto could not hold the pace toj the end. Bingham was beaten by less than two yards, lie was timed one-fifth 1 of a second inside the previous record, and won second place from Prudder, Meredith's teammate, by eight yards. The Summaries.
