Show DETROIT NOW HAS WONDERFUL INFIELD DETROIT, Mich., Oct. 2. IT. Ambms Jennings, of auburn hair and counties freckles and supreme optimism. Is author of the statement that an Infield can make a pitcher's record good or bad. Mr. Jennings Jen-nings is in a position to know. The club (bat Mr. Jennings now has i at least 25 per cent stronger than any or the other clubs he has had under him since hev went to Detroit to give that city a heavily-inked spot on the baseball map. Mr. Jennlncs has trained his defense de-fense to a higher state of efficiency fr tbe good reason that his pitchers did not come through to expectations. This year Mr. Jennings has InfielderB sitting on the bench who are superior to a lot of boys playing regular positions in the major leagues. He picked up "Pep" Young from tbe Pacific Coast. In this league Young was a sensation last year. He cannot hit much, although he Is a smart bantam and a wise base runner. But the boy can certainly field rings around any second ;acker In the American league with tbe exception of Edward Trowbridge Collins the welt-known literateur and captain or the Chicago White Skx. And he is about on a par with Collins when It comes to fielding. The only reason Young has not played in every game so far this year is because Kavanangh and Burns are doing some wonderful pinch hitting. Either of them ca n pla y f 1 rs t . Also bo t h have played second. Of the two, Kavanaugh is the better second baseman, but not nearly the equal of Young as a fielder. Bvish was never as great a defensive shortstop as he is this year, and Vltt is showing the best defense am- Detroit ihlrd Backer ever display. Because or . the added" strength at third, short ami first. Jennings can afford to bench Young while Kavanaugh is smashing (hr hall. He will slightly weaken the defense, but his advantage in hitting will be greater with Kavanaush in than would be tb advantage in fielding if Young wer n second. t |
