Show BIG FALLING OFF 1 FRENCH WHEAT CROP Chicago Market Higher in Consequence; Corn Lower; Low-er; Oats Unchanged. CHICAGO, Oct. 2. Official announcement announce-ment of a big falling off in the volume of the French crop guve considerable strength today to wheat prices here. The market closed strong, 1q to C net. higher, with December at 96 'S 96 c and May at 9Sc. Corn finished frc to lc under last night; oats, unchanged, and provisions at an advance of Tc to 15c. Buying Impetus in the wheat pit became be-came the most apparent after the attention atten-tion of traders had1 been directed to the prospect of greatly incerased imports being be-ing needed in France. The inference was drawn from a leading Chicago authority that as much as 150,000,000 bushels would have to lie shipped from other countrinF to meet French requirements. It was furthermore asserted that even this huge total would be inadequate if the German forces In France were expelled and the supplies in the Frem-h war zone were not saved for th& civilians ot that area. In this connection, however, the fact that freight, rates on the Atlantic had reached the highest point ever Known exercised somewhat of a restraining influence ou the bulls. Rains in Canada and a forecast of general gen-eral showers over the entire domestic belt tended to lift the wheat market almost al-most from the outset. Notwithstanding that a number of speculators were free sellers on the advance, no pronounced bearish result was at any time noticeable and the close was at virtually the top level of the session. Corn weakened enough to touch the lowest prices so far tins season. The favorable fa-vorable weather acted as a stimulus for sellers, but covering by shorts was at times on a liberal scale. Oats remained almost stationary. Commission houses absorbed the offerings. Higher prices in the hog market lifted provisions. There was no abatement in the export demand for cured meats.
