Show CONVENTIONS HELD IN MASSACHUSETTS Republicans and Democrats Meet; (L O. P. Delegates Oppose Prohibition. BOSTON, Oct 2. In ratifying the nominees of the recent primaries, the Kcpublican state convention today adopted a declaration of principles several sev-eral of which had .been suggested by Progressives who desired to support the party ticket. Resolutions favoring national na-tional prohibition and condemning loans to foreign belligerent nations were rejected. The platform contained planks indorsing in-dorsing neutrality, criticising the Mexican Mex-ican policy of the administration and favoring a constitutional convention, biennial bi-ennial elections, a short ballot and an executive budget. Woman suffrage was not mentioned, either in the resolutions or by any speaker. The proposed jplang opposing a foreign for-eign loan was disposed of without extended ex-tended debate. Some discussion was occasioned by the prohibition resolution resolu-tion offered by former Governor Eugene Eu-gene N. Foss, who made it his issue m his effort io obtain the party nomination nom-ination for governor at the primaries. It was rejected by a vote of 1,042 to 298. Former Congressman Samuel W. Mc-Call, Mc-Call, who is the party nominee for governor gov-ernor for a second time, was greeted warmly when he was presented to the convention by Lieutenant Governor Grafton D. Gushing, his ppponent iu the primaries. Mr. McOall devoted most of his speech of acceptance to criti- cism of the administration of Governor "Walsh, Democratic candidate for reelection. re-election. A new ovation record for this state was set by the delegates to the Democratic Demo-cratic state convention today in their greeting to Governor Walsh. For forty minutes the 700 delegates, assisted by 300 spectators in the gallery and a vigorous vig-orous and untiring band, shouted, cheered and sang in praise of the victor vic-tor id the last two gubernatorial campaigns cam-paigns and third-term candidate. The platform indorses the administration adminis-tration of President Wilson, advocates preparedness and neutrality, and otherwise oth-erwise deals wholly with state issues. Like the platform of the Republican convention, it urges the calling of a constitutional convention, : the. establishment estab-lishment of an executive .budget and old-age pensions. An effort to introduce a woman suffrage suf-frage plank was su- -ed arid a proposed pro-posed resolution opposing loans to belligerents bel-ligerents in the European waT met a similar fate. |
