Show KID WILLIAMS OUT FOR ERTLE'S SCALP Manager Offers to Bet $5000 Baltimore Fighter Can Get Knockout. BALTIMORE, Oct., 2. Alleging that Kid Williams did not foul Johnny Ertle of St. Paul, but was battering the contender around the ring when the claim which ended the bout was made, Sam Harris last night declares that the westerner is a huge joke as a boxer. 1 ' Just to show how easy I think Ertle is for Williams I am going to make him an offer which he cannot well afford to sidestep if he has any confidence in his ability. He has no claim to the bantamweight bantam-weight championship of the world for several reasons, but, first of all, I want to tell the public what I am willing to do for the St. Paul boy. "I will bet him $5000 that Williams will knock him out if they meet before January 1. The only conditions are that the weight be 116 pounds, the legitimate bantamweight limit; that the mill be scheduled for twenty rounds and that the winner take everything. I want no odds. The bet is good at even money; that's just what I think of Ertle 's chances. , ' ' Tf ntiT7 nrnmnfpr can cet him into the ring with Williams there will be no trouble made by me over the terms. But I know Ertle will not box. He doesn 't know anything about boxing. Williams knocked him down three times in the fourth round and once in the third. EveTy time he was hit his seeouds yelled ' f ouL ' "Now, my offer to Ertle is right, but I want some man of prominence to act as referee. I will accept Ed Smith of Chicago, Charley White of New Tork, Charles Eyton of San Franoisco, Billy Kocap of Philadelphia or Tom Andrews of Milwaukee. All of these men are well known and are not particular friends of mine. They simply are competent com-petent referees. ' ' Morover, Harris exhibited a statement state-ment with the name of George A. Barton Bar-ton signed to it. It follows: "As referee of the Williams-Ertle fight. I did not give a decision to Ertle on a foul because of the fact that under the Minnesota state law the referee is not permitted to make rulings. I simply disqualified Williams, as he really struck Ertle in the groin. I don't think the championship should change hands under the circumstances. The statement that I gave a decision on a foul is erroneous. "GEORGE BARTON." |
