' " ' No. 1 After You Raise the Chair Twist the Upper Part of Your Body First to the Right and Then to the Left By Jess Willard Copyright, 1915, by A. Merrltt. I DID not quite finish with all of my chair exercises in last Sunday's Sun-day's article, so to-day . on the top of the page you see me in ..the last chair lesson I have to give you. This is the hardest one of them all and requires a good deal of arm Birengtn, so u will not be until after you have practised my other chair exercises faithfully for some time mat you will Be able ,to do this. The exercise consists in giving the chair a sideways motion when you have it raised from the floor. The picture shows you how my body is tw'sted. That is part of the mo-ton. mo-ton. First you raise the chair from the floor as in the other exercises ex-ercises that 1 wrote to you about ind when you get it about three I'cet into the air twist sideways, first to ihe right and then to the left. teep the lower part of your body motionless, or as still as you can, ;ind simply confine the twisting to the body from the waist line up. This exercise not only puts considerable con-siderable strain on all the arm muscles mus-cles but is mighty fine for the waist or abdominal muscles. You've all probably heard of the solar plexus made famous by Fitzsimmons when he knocked out Jim Corbett. Well, this exercise directly affects the muscles covering and surroundiug that tender part of your body, The solar plexus needs to be protected by muscles moro than any other part of your body, for it is really the centre of all the nerves. In factN it is like a big railroad yard with the tracks running out every which way. The nerves represent the tracks, travelling as they do to all parts of All Foreign Rights Protected. your body, and the solar plexus is like the railroad depot where the tracks all merge into one another. A severe blow to the region if de-iivered de-iivered correctly according to rule's of boxing will paralyze a man and make him helpless Just as quickly as a blow on the Jaw. Any of my pupils who go in foi boxing should, after they have perfected the straight left Jab for the jaw, learn how to shift, it so that the solar plexus can be reached. Bob Fitzsimmons was one of the few brainy men in the ring. He studied anatomy, and knew exactly exact-ly what effect a blow on the solar plexus would have. The spectators at the ringside could not believe their eyes when they saw a man of Cor-bett's Cor-bett's perfect physical condition sink helpless to the floor without a mark on his body to show that he had been hit. Juyt to prove that what I say is correct tap yourself lightly in the stomach just when the ribs part and you'll see what I mean. Now if that part of your body was covered cov-ered wilh well developed muscles you wouldn't have to be afraid of a blow there. Of course, I don't want any of my boy and men readers to imagine for one instant that I am giving them advice on training for the prize ring, for I am not. I wouldn't recommend prize fighting to anybody as a vocation voca-tion for reasons that I have expressed ex-pressed in many of my articles, but I think every boy and girl, for that matter should learn to box for their own self-protection. You never can tell when you may have to use your fists and if you have a solar plexus covered with muscle you won't have to fear a blow below the waistline. My other pictures show an arm exercise that is as simple as it can be and yet works wonders tor those who persist in It. It requires no apparatus ap-paratus whatsoever. Lay flat on the floor as you see me doing in the bottom bot-tom picture. Crook your arms considerably, con-siderably, allow your hands to rest nut on the floor. Then raise the upper part of your body. Do this ten times a dav for the first week, and then as many times as you like after that, remembering always not to get yourself or your arms tired out. You will find that this exercise will develop not only your biceps and triceps, but your shoulder muscles mus-cles as well. It will also cause you to breathe hard and develop your lungs. In regard to this I would warn you to see that the floor surface sur-face that you lie on . is perfectly clean and free from dust, it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to spread a newspaper down on that part of the floor where your face will be. You will find that after practising this .exercise a few times you will be breathing very hard, so my instruc-rions instruc-rions as to the clean floor should not be overlooked. I continually receive letters from girls and women asking, me for exercise ex-ercise that will help them to reduce the waistline, and although I have devoted two or three articles, wholly and in part, to this subject, they write for more. The floor exercise that I illustrate to-day should be included in-cluded in the reducing lessons that 1 have described. But I will give a few points to women and girls in this exercise that will help them keep their waistlines at their natural dimensions. di-mensions. When raising yourself from the floor, as my lower picture shows, bend your back up as high as you can. I am not illustrating this movement move-ment in the picture as it is intended to show arm muscle building exercise only. But for women and girls who are trying to reduce I, would recom Possibly you remember re-member the picture of the high school girl that accompanied accom-panied one of my earlier articles in which she was shown not only touching the floor, but laying the palms of her hands on it. The stout w o m en would laugh to think that ' v--,r;i-ii---frrl- , ff? fiWVfm ,V.i ,, : '., , '.!."...,, i.,.,.i..i.i !... 1 No. 2 Lay Full Length Face Downwards on the Floor with the Arms Held Straight. she might ever be able to do that, but it )S only a case of constant practice when anybody can do it This exercise, also, stretches the body. You'll feel it in your legs arms and back. Although I guess it is one of the oldest exercises known of, still it is taught in all gymnasiums and athletic classes, and none better has ever been invented for the especial espe-cial purpose for which it is used. I have seen classes offiremen and policemen doing this exercise and have found that it is included in the daily progranune of athletics in all .large city departments. If it is valued so highly by police and firemen, fire-men, who have to be athletic and who cannot afford to get too stout, then it must be a pretty good thing. But I would warn women and girls that lots of you are born to be stout, or plump, and if you deliberately set out to take off flesh that nature intended in-tended you to have you will injure your health. A person who is naturally natu-rally etout has a lot to be thankful for. They are generally healthier than their thinner brethren, and everybody admits that they are better bet-ter matured. The old adage that nobody loves a fat man is belled every day. Do you know a fat bachelor? I never met one. They are generally thin, crabbed men with dyspepsia and a sour look that wo.uld turn a bowl of sugar into vinegar. In response to many requests from readers of both sexes Jess Willard next week will describe exercises ex-ercises tending toward the development develop-ment of the neck and forearms. |
