Louis Curry, an Indian trader from Ouray, came into Koosevult tonight after parleying with the, L'te Indians, who have refused to give up two 'of their number, wanted tor shooting George Bart let t. The 1 n-d n-d tans have barricaded themselves at Whiteroeks, twenty miles north of here, at the old government reservation headquarters, head-quarters, now abandoned. Curry expressed the belief that the Indians would come in with the men j wanted within the next few days. He 'says they are still distrustful of tlie ; whites, but believes they will ultimute-! ultimute-! ly decide to give the men who are , vun tod over to the authorities. Old Chief Capoot, leader of the Utes, still wants to fight, according to Curry. The Indians trust Curry, and Capoot told him that the Indians could get no justice from the white men. Capoot said that a year ago the white mon killed an Indian they had in iail. It developed that this was an Indian who had died of' tuberculosis. Medical students got hold of the body and cut : it up to make some examinations. Later the body was shipped back to the Indians. Oapoot, however, saw the knife wounds, and came to the conclusion conclu-sion that the white officers had killed the Indian. Furthermore, Old Capoot told Curry that some white men shot two squaws at Taft, near here, some time ago, and were allowed to go without punishment. These incidents, Curry says, have aroused the ire of the TJtes. Sheriff Hatch Murray has told the Utos that if they will bring the accused Indiana into Vernal, "any time within this moon," the matter will be settled amicably and the Indians who shot Bartlott will be let off easy, becaiufe Bartlctt is recovering. Another Indian who wants to hold out, according to Curry, is Redcap, who 1 led a band of Indians in a revolt in North Dakota seven years ago. Capoot is the father of Sourdough and the father-in-law of Tony, two of the leaders lead-ers of the present uprising. It is reported, re-ported, however, that Sourdough and Tony favor a surrender. Sheriff Murray is conducting an investigation in-vestigation in an effort to determine where the Indians got their whisky, which started all the trouble. Ho has learned that the liquor was purchased in Vernal, but has not yet located the responsible parties. |
