Show "THE GIRL AND THE GOVERNOR" ; AT SALT LAKE THEATER - I Thero is ono thing that thoVSalt Lake Opera company can do it can sing. Not only that, but tho members can sing better than almost anybody else. Hence, when announcement is mado that the Salt Lako Opera compau- is to pro-sent pro-sent an opera all music lovers' know what that moans. " Saturday, at a matinee, the first presentation pre-sentation of "Tho Girl and tho Governor" Gov-ernor" was given. Thero was a large audienco to welcome the company and those in attendanco gave the players cordial welcome. And again Saturday evening the same was repeated. And there was reason for a cordial welcome, for all in tho cast aro home people. The principals wore Misses Hazel Taylor, Agatha Bcrkhool and Edna JSva'us; Messrs. John D. Spencer, George W. Pyper, Fred C. Graham, Hugh W. Dougall Alex S. Campbell and Horace Ensign. All of these have been heard in light; opera before, but never before did they sing so well as they did on Saturday, and the' wero encored . again and again. They song solos, they i j sang in chorus and in duet, in trio, in j i quartotlo and sextette, and their voices were never sweeter, never richer, never j moro musical, and when the sextette from "Lucia," with original orchestra- I tion, was rondered, the audience went i into" raptures. It was the best thing, , musically, the company has ever done. The chorus is, perhaps, tho strongest one the company has ever had, and it is a chorus that any professional com- i pany would be proud of, and it would captivate and charm nnd audience. The ensemble in tho second act was one of ! tho best over heard in the theater. The stage settings were beautiful, ' especially in the second and third acts, and tho costumes were the handsomest j seen hero for a long time. The orchestra, under the direction of i Professor McCIellan, also did itself ' proud. "The Girl and the Governor" will go again the coming week, up to" and including in-cluding Thursday night, with a special matiuco on Monday. J |
