Show AMERICANISM IS PROGRESS. Wo printed yesterday morning iu full- the malignant and mendacious editorial edi-torial carried in the Dcscrct News the samo evening that it had' tho uows of tho designation of Salt Lako City as tho place of holding tho National Grand Army encampment next year. Tho News, in its vicious editorial, assumed as-sumed that cortain persons were telling lies here, that other persons were being be-ing nbuscd, and that the cit -was suf-feriug suf-feriug from tho condition which it, thus misrepresented. Its efforts seemed, us usual, to be directed chiefly against Tho Salt" Lake Tribune. But iu so far as its attack upon Tho Trihuno is concerned, it could not possibly pos-sibly bo bocauso of anything olso than tho fact that wc havo told tho truth absolutely, fairly, and squarely, and havo given chaptor and verso in corroboration. cor-roboration. Tho Tribune !s offenso seems to bo chieily in reproducing the inspired words of tho prophets,' seers, and rovolators iu both former and re cent tunes, and snowing tnat tno lawless law-less clement which has so long dominated dom-inated tho Mormon church is a treasonable trea-sonable clement, falso to 'it's neighbors and to its God. Tho church organ appears ap-pears to mako its co-operation and the co-oporation of thoso who hold with it in the v,-olcouio and entertainment of tho- Grand Army, conditioned upou Tho Tribune giving up its fight for Americanism Amer-icanism and its war upou tho lawless, adulterous, treacherous priesthood. We may as well say right hero that that war will not be given up, but Will cou-tinuo cou-tinuo in full forco and with even greater intensity as wo shall bo ablo to lring. tho guus to bear. . ;.. . . Tho News took Iho absolutely uu-tenablo uu-tenablo position that what it assumes to bo a war ou religion (nothing of the kind entering into tho contest hero) has hurt this city, that Salt Lako should now havo 200,000 in place of tho SO.000 inhabitants, which it admits, aro hero. But if that is true, two things aro apparent: ap-parent: First, it should bo easily proved that Salt Lako City thrived better prior to the coming into power of tho American part3" than it lias, dono since. Is airy one suflicicntly imbued im-bued with tho priestly idea to risk his ropulation in stating that this is tho case? Can any man of candor, of sense, and knowledge of the situation, say that the city is in a moro backward condition uow than it was during the Morris administration and the administrations that preceded it when tho priesthood were in control and tho city languished V" .Does . not every one know the facts to be contrary con-trary to the assumption of tho Nows? Is it not a matter of common knowledge know-ledge that tho city is progressing jiin-dor jiin-dor American administration in 'a' Svay that it never; progressed before,?. ,, Is it not true that there, is- more building, moro public improvements, a vastly greater influx of population hero tlfau thoro was ever beforo in such a limited time as since American control began? Do not these facts and that they arc facts is a matter of cvo.ry-day- knowledge know-ledge to ovoiybotb' absolutely prove that American administration has been the 'salvation of Salt Lake, has vitalized vital-ized ovcrj- form of business, and has put tho citj" on the highwuy of progress and expansion, and given it a prostigo and growth never before krjo.wn in. its history? The answer to these questions ques-tions cannot possibly be other than distinctly dis-tinctly in favor of American administration; adminis-tration; because tho facts bear out every statement, and show that Americanism Amer-icanism has boon the vary best .advertisement, .adver-tisement, the very best Uoost for Salt Lake City that this place has over knowu. If it were true, as the besotted and mendacious church organ asserts, that Americanism has kept back progress from Salt Lake City, and that the unity of unopposed priestly rule is a benefit, wc should be ablo to see a vast progress in other parts of the State where Iho" churjih ecclcsiasts and the church controlled con-trolled parties arc in full- and unobstructed unob-structed control. Now. where is that progress? Is there any portion of tho State tha't can compare with Salt Lake City in progress and advancement at the present time? Where is there any sign of special vitality elsewhere , within with-in Utah? It is quite true that tho Stu,tg is progressing in a torpid sort of way; it is quite true that even the paralyziuir grip of an arbitrary and unscrupulous priesthood cannot altogether repress growth and progress; but it is true that that grip does squeeze the life out of the people; it does keep away increase of population, and- capital; it docs .'retard .'re-tard growth, and. it dpes .prevent advancement. ad-vancement. The record proves it, tho facts show it every da3'. We present the case fairly and squarely on its merits: Salt Lake City, active, progressive, growing as never before, conspicuously advancing to the forefront of American cities of the West, drawing support, strength, and vitality, by reason of its accordance -with American politics, with, tho institutions insti-tutions of the country, and with the concord of effort between it and other American cities, is conspicuously the growing portion of the State. Utah at large, with immense possibilities, with resources untold, and illimitable, lies comparatively lethargic in the grasp of a hostile and vindictive ecclcsiasticisin which goes far to crushing the life out of progress and destroying "the energy and the vitality of -the people There .you havo ; the two piety res. Compare them, contrast thorn, and sec whether tho facts are not precisely as wo havo stated, and whether the News is not again convicted of the most, shameless falsehood, thor' vilest .and most malig-naut malig-naut sectarian basonoss and hate. Its misrepresentations aro so comploto and manifest that they aro easily refuted. Any citizen of Utah, kuowing tho conditions con-ditions in this city and in tho Stale at large, - must seo at once tho truth of tho prosoulatiou herein mado by Tho Tribune. And that presentation is a eomplcto confutation not only of tho statements of the Dcsorot News, but is destructive of the wholo underlying and bolstcrcd-up fabric of false pretenses pre-tenses Upon which its statements were put fortlu |
