Show Zoysia Grass? Mot Here All advertising is not adaptable adap-table throughout the United States. This is true about Zoysia grass, says Melvin S. Burningham, USU area horticulturist. hor-ticulturist. MANY folks read about zoysia grass and all the advantages ad-vantages of it. It is not that good in Utah unless it is in the warmer sections of the state, such as Utah's Dixie, in St. Georse. Zoysia grass is started from plugs which are expensive. It takes about three years for it to fill in or get established, if it ever does. It has disadvantage disadvan-tage of growing beyond the grass borders, such as into the flower or shrub beds. IT TURNS brown early in the fall and greens up late in the spring like bermuda grass. It requires a regular supply of nitrogen to stay green during the summer. It does have one advantage. It does not grow fast, therefore, it only needs to be cut about every two weeks, but it is so tough that it requires a sharp power mower to mow it. PROFESSOR Louis A. Jensen, Jen-sen, from Utah State University, Univer-sity, says, "With the Kentucky Ken-tucky bluegrass and the improved strains of bluegrass he would not plant zoysia grass in Utah." J Dr. Schery from Marys-f Marys-f ville, Ohio says, "Zoysia (grass is still a southern beauty, but not for the areas where Kentucky bluegrass will grow." |
