I Toastmistresses are cooperating with the JAmerican Cancer Society providing Speakers' Bureau Assistance with talks to elementary school children on anti-smoking ("I'll Never Start"pledges) and breast cure and self-examination lectures to womens groups. LAST WEEK toastmistress member Mary Landen initiated ini-tiated participation in the cancer education campaign with a presentation at Emerson Emer-son Elementary School in Salt Lake City. A film "Huffless, Puffless Dragon" was shown, after which she elicited ideas from the students as to what would be a good reason not to start smoking. Some of the excellent ideas advanced by the students not o start includedbesides the obvious health reasons: the fire hazards of smoking; air pollution; inconsideration of others by smokers smoke and jeaving cigarette burns as iheir trademark wherever they go; the expense of prnoking where the money could be spent on much more r'fun" ' activities or purchases; the debilitating effects of smoking on sports performance; the stink, mess and bad breath of smoking; and the fact that smoking is just one more bad, but Unnecessary, habit to have to xert will power to break. I THE youngsters, of third trade and up, then filled out an "I'll Never Start" pledge ard, and turned it in to the Cancer Society and received an "I'll Never Start" pin to wear proudly. . The most tactful way to refuse a cigarette was decided decid-ed to politely, but firmly to say "No thanks--I don't smoke." THERE IS a free Cancer Screening Clinic scheduled by the Cancer Society at the Vai Verda Stake House, 500 West and 2600 South, on May 22 which will include free Pap tests, breast tumor scans and instruction in breast self examination. |
