J PLAN YOUTH JOBS By De De BLODGETT BOUNTIFUL - The Youth Action Committee (YAC) is planning to take action towards providing a new youth job service for the community. THE DECISION was made after a survey was given to students from the various junior and senior high schools in the Bountiful area. The survey showed a great desire and need to have more available jobs for the youth. Over half of those surveyed replied that they do not have a job and would, indeed, like to find one. The new committee consists con-sists of volunteer students from he various local schools and in under the direction of the Davis County Youth Doug Larsen, third from left, discusses plans for new Youth Employment Service (YES) office being planned for South Davis County with Chris Abel, Cathy Lowe and Dave Pratt, left to right. Counseling Center at 32 East 100 South in Bountiful, 295-7494. AT A recent meeting, these young people listened to Doug Larsen, their guest speaker irom the Utah Department of Employment Security (Job Service). Mr. Larsen commented, "Job Service will provide an area in our building for the volunteer Youth Action Committee. Com-mittee. They can work out of it in cooperation with our own program." THE volunteer youth will learn how to help other young people fill out an application. When a job opening arises, the youth must match it with the person desiring that job. "The youth can also grab a phone book and start calling various homes and businesses to see if they would care to hire the young people in the community for any odd jobs," added Mr. Larsen. 'This list will consist mainly of a need for yard workers, lawn mowers and babysitters. "THIS KIND of service by the Youth Action Committee will provide them with some good office experience not to mention first chance at the job openings," said Mr. Larsen. Lar-sen. "It will also raise the lumber of youth employment n this area." The number of unemployed adults in the labor market is nationally 6.1 percent, 5.1 percent in Utah, and down to 4 percent in the south part of Davis County. Yet the number of unemployed youth in the labor market is three times the number of adults. The work hours usually do not fit in with the availability of youth, and the adults applying apply-ing for jobs are usually more qualified than the youth. A FEW years ago we placed a Youth Employment Service (YES) in five Davis. County high schools. It didn't , last long, though, because the school kids were not taking full advantage of it," said Mr. -Larsen. "1 hope they show this new program more support." sup-port." Tte Youth Action Committee Commit-tee (YAC) will soon begin to . set up its new job service,, j ifter which the volunteer; : committee members will. - daily trade off the set working. j hours. j : |
