Show Energy use comparison Energy consumption in the post-World War II period has been characterized by a continuous con-tinuous rise in demand accompanied ac-companied by a substantial shift toward the consumption of oil and gas and away from that of coal. BETWEEN 1947 and 1976. total demand for energy increased at an average annual an-nual rate of 2.8 percent. Within the total, demand for oil and gas grew rapidly averaging annual rates of 4 and 5.4 percent respectively. Coal accounted for about 48 percent in 1947 but had declined to 18.5 percent by 1976 |
