Show L?UiDuS(es: L3sll? By EDWARD H. SIMS FLORIDA - Watching the Philadelphia Phillies, one wonders only about their pitching. There are many who think the Phils should have won the 1977 playoffs, which featured several weird umpiring um-piring calls and a last game played in a heavy downpour. THEY LOST to the. Dodgers, who then lost to the Yanks in the World Series. Does this hinder or inspire the team in 1978? Dannv Ozark, Phillie manager, is optimistic: op-timistic: "1 think the 1977 disap pointment is gone now," he says. "We thought we could win it last year. But that's in the past now. And what happened hap-pened last year could help us this year. Our guys are hungry for what they felt they should have had in 1977." THAT MAY be, but will the pitching this year be good enough? Last year Steve Carlton Carl-ton had a Cy Young award year and a 2.64 ERA, which produced 23 wins. If anything happens to Carlton, the Phils .are instantly in trouble. Larry Christensen, number two pitcher, had a 4.04 ERA. Randy Lerch had a 5.06. Jim Lonborg had a good year in 1977 but has often been plagued with injuries. Jim Kaat is 40 this November and was only 6-11 last season. YET THE Phillies are largely sticking to their 1977 staff, though keeping an eye on Jim Wright, Dan Warthen and a few others. They're hoping for further great things from Warren Brusstar (7-2 and 2.66 last season) and repeat 1977 performances per-formances from Carlton and Lonborg to provide the pitching. It may be enough. OTHERWISE the club is set.
