Show Three local coeds will compete for BYU women's track By GARY BLODGETT Sports Editor PROVO Three coeds attending Brigham Young University from south Davis County will be competing com-peting this year on the Cougar Women's track and field team. Representing the Cougars from Woods Cross are Carolyn Knight, a freshman competing in the sprints and long jump, and Elizabeth (Taylor) Katoa, a prep ail-American, ail-American, who will compete in the distance races. Ginger Andersen, of Farmington, and graduate of Davis High, will be entered in the sprints and hurdles. A 5-foot 10 senior with a long list of prep and college records to her credit, Katoa set several track and field records at Woods Cross High and at Ricks Junior College. She was a first team all-American all-American in Ricks in cross-country, and a member of the Ricks 4x800 all-American relay team. She is also an HCAC academic ail-American in 1987-89. She placed second in the HCAC championships last year in the 3,000-meter run. A junior at BYU and graduate of Davis High, Andersen was a 1987 all-state academic athlete and high-honor high-honor student at Davis High. As a freshman, she was first in the TAC meet in the 100-meter hurdles and qualified, but did not attend, the national championships. A freshman, Knight won a medal of academic excellence at Woods ; Cross where she also set a record in i the 400-meter, was first in the long jump and placed second in the 200- meter of the State High School Women's Track and Field Championships. Cham-pionships. BYU's track and field team is competing this weekend in the Texas Relays at the University of Texas. The first outdoor meet hosted by BYU will be April 13-14, the BYU-Tri Meet, involving Utah State University, Southern Utah State and BYU. The NCAA Championships Cham-pionships will be held May 30 through June 2 in Durham, N.C. |
