Easter gift of music to air World-renowned soprano Dame Kir Te Kanawa joins the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony conducted by Julius Rudel for a unique Easter special of classical and popular favorites that will air Friday, April 13 at 8:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, April 15 at 8 p.m. 'The Mormon Tabernacle Choir: an Easter Gift of Music,' produced for PBS by KUEDSalt Lake City, was videotaped during a live concert con-cert in the Mormon Tabernacle on the historic Temple Square in Salt Lake City. London Decca Records last Christmas released a recording of the concert. The hour-long PBS special, which will be offered to PBS stations each Easter through 1993, features select pieces from the concert con-cert With selections from the finest of classical opera along with popular favorites, the program ap peals not only to the true afficiando of opera, but to a broader audience of music lovers everywhere. The gifted international soprano alternates with and joins the choir in a program of sacred, operatic and musical theatre selections with emphasis em-phasis on the inspirational. Among those included are: Gounod's "Oh Divine Redeemer,' the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria, the Hallelujah Chorus from Beethoven's "Mount of Olives," the overture to Verdi's "La Forza del Destino," and the Easter Hymn from "Cavaleria Rusticana" by Mascagni. Also featured are: Rodgers and Hammerstein's ' Climb Every Mountain ' ' and "You'll Never Walk Alone," the Pilgrim's Chorus from Wagner's "Tannhauser," Mendelssohn's "On Wings of Song," Franck's "Psalm 150," and Sir Henry Bishop's "Home, Sweet Home.' One of the most highly acclaimed sopranos in the world today. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa made her debut at Covent Garden in 1970. On Dec. 1, 1979, she gained instant international interna-tional stardom and conquered the opera world when she sang Countess Almaviva in a new production pro-duction of "Le Nozze di Figaro" at Covent Garden. Since then Dame Kiri has been a leading star of Covent Co-vent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera. She is equally renowned in recital, with orchestra and on recordings, recor-dings, film and television. Since it was founded in 1847, the 320-voice Mormon Tabernacle Choir has risen to national prominence pro-minence through its national and international in-ternational tours, its weekly broadcasts broad-casts on CBS radio, and its many recordings for CBS and Columbia Records. The Utah Symphony Orchestra, designated as one of the nation's major orchestras by the American Symphony Orchestra League, gives some 250 perfonnances annually throughout Utah and the West Julius Rudel, best known as head of the New York City Opera from 1956-78, was guest conductor for "The Easter Gift of Music." The former music director of the Buffalo Buf-falo Philharmonic and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Rudel has been a regular guest conductor of Hamburg and Paris Operas, Covent Co-vent Garden, Munich Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. Kirk Browning, director of the acclaimed PBS series, "Live From -Lincoln Center" and "Live From the Met," directed "The Mormon Tabernacle Choir: An Easter Gift of Music."
