Explorer scouts head to tourney By JUDY JENSEN Editor Explorer scout cagers from the Woods Cross 4th Ward captured the first place title Friday in the Explorer Ex-plorer Scout tournament championship champion-ship game against the Orchard 6th ward. The Woods Cross team jumped out to a 20 point lead in the first half, but the Orchard players fought back to within eight points in the third quarter. Woods Cross then caught fire in the fourth winning the game 77-52. Coach Don Gurr said, "We settled down after the third quarter comeback and played like we normally do and went on to win." This was the sixth win in a row for the Woods Cross team. The tournament began with 18 teams from eight stakes in North Salt Lake, Woods Cross and Bountiful. The Woods Cross team, including in-cluding Mike Gurr, Shane Hubbard, Todd Van Uteri t, Jason Bothelo, Jeremy Bothelo, Shane Bothelo, Greg Pool, Paul King and Thane Goodrich, will now advance to tournament play in Salt Lake where 1 2 other teams will compete in the double elimination tournament. The team's first game will be Friday, and they hope to compete in the championship game April 27. This was the first time the Explorer Ex-plorer scouts in this district have organized tournament play. The Explorer Presidents' Association (EPA) is organized on a district level for Explorer scouts. According Accor-ding to their advisor Dean Johnson of the Woods Cross East Stake, "This is the first group of boys in the council to get it up and nirining. The program is run totally by the boys. They took care of the entire tournament, and we're very proud of them," he said. Other advisors to the Explorer group include Chairman Andy Eversole, of the Orchard Stake; Administrative Vice Chairman Mark Anderson of the Val Verda Stake; Program Vice Chairman, Justin Peters of the Woods Cross Stake, and Secretary Reagan Th acker of the Bountiful East Stake. In addition to the basketball tournament tour-nament the boys from the 49 wards involved in the district have planned community service projects and an Explorer scout super camp. "We try to teach the boys leadership leader-ship skills and goal setting skills," said Johnson. "We tell them to go 'ape' with the program, which is what we have called this Aaron ic Priesthood Exploring group. ' |
