Show Bountiful Community Church observes Holy Week BOUNTIFUL-Holy Week, the seven days before Easter, will be observed at the Bountiful Community Com-munity Church (United Church of Christ and Episcopal Church of the Resurrection) located at 400 E. 100 N. The week begins April 8 with the Sunday of Our Lord's passion and Palm Sunday Services at 9 a.m. and 1 1 a.m. The church will be decorated with varieties of Palm branches, marking the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, and the congregation con-gregation will sing the traditional anthem "All Glory Laud and Honor." During the service, the passion narrative from the Gospel According Accor-ding to Saint Matthew will be read. On Wednesday morning in Holy Week, there will be a special service ser-vice at 7 a.m. in Danforth Chapel with Holy Eucharist and a Lenten message. A major event observing the washing of feet and commemorating com-memorating the Lord's Supper will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. That service is called Maundy Thursday, a word meaning command, taken after the words Jesus gave to the disciples in John 13:34, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: an-other: even as I have loved you." At the end of the service is the draping drap-ing of the cross and the dimming of the lights accompanied by music. On Good Friday at 12 noon, there will be the "The Stations of the Cross" led by the Reverends Peter Hovland, Don Proctor, Peter Chase and Dovie Hutchinson. The devotion, known as "The Way of the Cross," is an adaptation to local usage of a custom widely observed by pilgrims to Jerusalem: the offering of prayer at a series of places in that city traditionally associated as-sociated with our Lord's passion and death. The number of stations are based on inferences from the gospel account ac-count and will be set up along the walls of the church sanctuary and outside in the Memorial Garden. On Good Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. there will be a candlelight ser vice with Biblical readings, music and prayers. On Holy Saturday, April 14, there will be "The Great Vigil of Easter Service" at 7:30 p.m. with baptisms and Holy Eucharist. The service begins in darkness, symbolic of the tomb, and as the new fire is enkindled, the Paschal Candle is brought into the sanctuary in procession with traditional Christian Chris-tian anthems. On Easter Sunday, a service of Holy Eucharist, using "The Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church," begins at 9 a.m. The Church will be decorated with an array of Easter lilies arranged arrang-ed by Carol Schneider and the Alter Guild. AT 11 a.m., there will be a festive ecumenical service. Music will be arranged and led by Alan Austin and the choir. The Rev. Don Proctor will preach at both services. All are welcome to attend any or all of the services. |
