Show Pipeline opponents win battle By JUDY JENSEN Editor The fight against the Wasatch Variation of the Kern RiverWyCal natural gas pipeline has finally paid off for its opponents. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has granted a request for rehearing in the matter. This action, according to members of the Bountiful Hills Residents Concerned Citizens Association (BHRCCA) is what they have been struggling to achieve. "It's good to see the light at the end of the tunnel," said ReNee Coon, who started the opposition nearly three years ago,. Coon said she feels the petition for rehearing was granted due to the support of the hundreds of citizens who signed petitions which prompted the Legislature to take action and pass a resolution opposing the Wasatch Variation. The variation would route the pipeline through the Bountiful foothills and Mueller Park and continue con-tinue near homes in North Salt CONTINUED ON PG.2 4, Study done in the area is sufficient and accurate. Opponents also claim that, as requested re-quested by law, not all other proposed pro-posed routes for the pipeline have been thoroughly investigated to determine de-termine feasibility of the routes. The FERC order granting the rehearing will delay construction of the pipeline until all of the issues raised can be resolved. Local opponents hope this rehearing will bring to light the 'critical environmental sensitivity" sen-sitivity" of the Wasatch Front. They also hope this knowledge will help the FERC Commission to decide to reroute the proposed pipeline out of local populated areas. Dave Soutter, a local opponent who has volunteered Hundreds of hours in the fight against the Wasatch Wa-satch Variation, said his group does not oppose the pipeline. "It would in fact be a great economic boon to the entire state. Our only objection to the pipeline is the proposed route. The economic advantages do not have to be lost if it is moved out of a residential area. We want to be a good neighbor to the pipeline, but not a next door neighbor," he said. 'He was great to get that work done. He really helped us," said Brown. Brunsdale, who has filed fil-ed to run against Congressman Jim Hansen in the upcoming congressional congres-sional race, has been a vocal opponent oppo-nent of the Wasatch Variation of the pipeline. According to the FERC order for rehearing "The requests for rehearing rehear-ing and or clarification are granted solely for the purpose of affording the Commission additional time to consider the issues raised in these requests. ' The issues raised by concerned entities include, among others, whether or not there will be two pipelines. At this time, both Kern River, and WyCal have been issued permits to build pipelines along the Wasatch Variation route. Another point at issue is whether or not the Environmental Impact |
