Show BYU Will Dig Into Historic Mercur If you've ever wanted literally liter-ally to dig into an old Utah mining min-ing town, now's your chance. EXCAVATIONS at historic Mercur in the Oquirrh Mountains Moun-tains will begin May 4 as part of a special archaeological field school operated by BYU. Dr. Dale L. Berge. professor profes-sor of anthropology and archeology and director of the excavation, said that college and high school students as well as other interested people are invited to participate. No previous experience is necessary. neces-sary. "MERCUR WAS a gold mining town established in the I87()'s." the archeaologist said. "It grew into a thriving commercial area until a fire destroyed most of the town in 1902 and was rebuilt. The field school will attempt to uncover the architectual and artifactual remains." The school will operate during dur-ing BYU's spring term May 4 to June 24. Participants may attend all or part of the school. BTU students of any major may sign up for credit through Anthropology 455R. High school students may sign up through conferences and workshops. Participants should be at least in the eighth grade. DR. BERGE said that fees will cover transportation from BYU to the site each day. plus registration. However, living arrangements must be made by participants.
