I IIM ' - ' ...'fc HANDICAP WEEK Sherrie Stewart, in wheelchair, Miss Utah Handicapped with her physical therapist Laura Williams meet with Boulton Elementary School students to discuss Handicapped Awareness Week. Posters, handicapped people, peo-ple, films and .puppets filled very special needs in providing the children and staff of Boulton Boul-ton Elementary School with Handicapped awareness during dur-ing the week of March 29. UNDER THE direction of Sharon Haskell of the Boulton PTA, the children of Boulton School became knowledgeable knowledge-able of the capabilities experi ences and problems of the blind, cerebral palsied, deaf, those with birth defects and persons who are the victims of disease or accidents as these people shared how they cope with their handicaps. A neighborhood neigh-borhood chorus, directed by-Margaret by-Margaret Bess, gave a message mes-sage through song w hich made the children aware of ways they are all alike and how they can ease the problems of others. Sherrie Stewart, Miss Wheelchair Utah of 1982, was a guest speaker as were Ralph Chase from the Utah Center for the Blind Rehabilitation. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Smith from the Easter Seal Society and Rosemary Lindsay and Janice Brinkerhoff from the South Davis Community Care Center. LARGE PUPPETS of the children (one in a wheelchair), operated by voluteers from the Salt Lake School District Veri-na Veri-na Mori and Beth Harris, presented pre-sented an exceptionally educational educa-tional show for each grade which pinpoints through dialogue dia-logue encountered by children who are different. Guests, staff and school personnel per-sonnel who work with or are handicapped talked to the grade levels. ARLENE LAPIDUS, Bill Airsman, JoAnn Weston and daughter, Jenny, Mary Ann Howes and son Adam, Susan Bryson and son Abram, Isabel Ward and daughter Julie, Margaret Mar-garet Bess and daughter Amy, Sharon Haskell and son Blake, Geri Mickelson and son John, Kathleen Redd and a group of Campfire girls from Bountiful all contributed greatly to make this Handicapped Awareness Week a most meaningful experience ex-perience for the people of Boulton School. |
