Hotel Man lamed Head Of Highway 40 Group Clair Hopkins, operator of the Commercial Hotel in Vernal, was elected president of the National Highway 40 Association at the annual an-nual meeting held Nov. 12 and 13 at Elko, Nevada. He succeeds Clarence Reiff, of Kremling, Colo. Ken Sowards, also of Vernal, and Steve Bellon, Roosevelt cafe owner, were elected board members. mem-bers. As president of the Utah-Colorado Utah-Colorado group, Henry B. Millecam, former Vernal' mayor, is also a member of the board of directors. This gives the Basin four members mem-bers on the national board. The meeting discussed the possibility pos-sibility of filming "U. S. 40," a book by George R. Stewart embracing em-bracing coast-to-coast travel on this highway. Preliminary work has already been done on some scenes. While the Association had previously pre-viously voiced its disapproval to toll roads, opinion was expressed at this meeting that toll roads mieht be the only solution to some problems. Lobbying Approved The membership approved appointment ap-pointment of lobbying committees and favored setting up machinery to furnish "accurate and truthful" weather reports covering highway conditions. Robert P. Campbell, executive secretary, reported that there were 2,300 members in the organization. Retiring president Clarence Reiff of Kremmling, Colo., called for continued support of a four-lane highway over Donner Pass. Principal speaker of the banquet was Henry K. Evans, highway expert ex-pert for the Pacific Intermountain Express Company. Other Officers Other officers elected were Ralph Ennis, Lakewood, Colo., first vice-president; vice-president; Ed Nurnberger, Ellis, Kansas, second viefc-president; Ralph Druehl, Elko, third vice-president, vice-president, and Bernard O'Kane, Lakewood, secretary-treasurer. Directors named from Utah were Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Sowards, Sow-ards, Vernal; Mr. Bellon, Roosevelt; Leon Richie, Heber; C. A. Black. Sheldon R. Brewster and Jay Stringham, Salt Lake City. |
