Show CANCER DETECTION CENTER TO BE ESTABLISHED APRIL 12 A free cancer detection cen- J ter, sponsored by the American i Cancer society, will be conducted conduct-ed Thursday, April 12. at the Roosevelt hospital, Mrs. R. V. Larson, cancer society captain for Eastern Duchesne county, announced Tuesday. Registration for the examination examin-ation at the center will be held Wednesday evening, Apr. 11, in the Roosevelt city offices beginning be-ginning at 7:30. It will be necessary neces-sary for those desiring to be examined at the center to receive re-ceive a statement from their family doctor before they can be registered. This is being done to eliminate confusion which arose last year because of an overcrowded schedule. The detection center. Mrs. Larsen explained, is not for persons per-sons who know that they have cancer, and are being treated for it, but for those who may have symptoms and suspect that cancer might be present. Cancer detection centers have as their primary objective the ' discovery of cancer in apparently apparent-ly well persons at the earliest possible date, so that treatment 'can be instituted. The centers do not give treatment, nor do they undertake special diagnostic diagnos-tic procedure. Their function is to provide a thorough physical examination with special em phasis on conditions which might lead to cancer. In case an examination discloses dis-closes the presence of cancer, the patient is referred to his or her family physician for treatment. treat-ment. The name center is applied ap-plied to the detection units to distinguish them from clinics engaged in diagnosis and treatment, treat-ment, Mrs. Larsen pointed out. Some of the cancer symptoms outlined by Mrs. Larsen are: any sore that does not heal, particularly par-ticularly about the tongue, lips, or mouth; a painless lump or thickening, especially in the breast, lip or tongue; progressive progres-sive change in the color or size of a wart, mole or birthmark; persistent indigestion, persistent persist-ent hoarseness, unexplained cough, or difficulty in swallowing; swallow-ing; bloody discharges from any of the natural body openings, or any change in the normal bowel habits. |
