Show DOG TES1 RACE , AT ASHTON, IDAHO ASHTON, Idaho, Feb. 21. The second sec-ond annual Ashton-Yellowstono dog team race will he held on March 3. Tho one held a year ago proving such a huge success, a permanent organization organi-zation being effected. Tho members of the organization have never let the matter rest, and as a result Ashton and vicinity are "up on their toes" over the coming event. Intense rivalry has developed between be-tween each dog team owner and his particular admirers. As there are eight to ten teams, from fivo to seven dogs to a team, one can imagine the situation as being lively to a considerable consider-able extent. One team of five dogs is composed of thoroughbred Irish setters; set-ters; another team of Shepherds, another an-other or Airdales and still others of "just dogs," each owner claiming camel -speed and endurance for his string of favorites. The course of the race this year has been changed from that of last; a year ago the race was from Yellowstone station in the Yellowstone park down to Ashton, via tho O. S. L. right of way. A fierce blizzard accompanied with several feet of new fallen snow on the day of the race severely interfered inter-fered with the timo of running and as a result the finish was extended into the second day. Profiting by last year's experience, the route has been changed so that the race will bo run in open country in place of through the mountains. The course this year will extend west from Ashton for several sev-eral miles, then south to the Salt Lake-Yellowstone highway and along the highway back to Ashton, covering a distance of about twenty miles. This will assure the race being fast and still of sufficient length to try out to the fullest extent the stamina of each driver and team. The usual ski races will be in evidence, evi-dence, as well as a free-for-all-boy-dog-race. ' Last year the latter event was a free-for-all 200-yard dash. There were fifteen entries in the race and at ono timo there were fifteen dogs in one fight, each team with his little owner trying to get his pets out of the fray and get to going again. I |
