Show STREET CARS ALMOST BURIED IN SNOW DURING THE BIG STORM Trolley Service on the Bench Demoralized at an Early Hour This Morning, But, With the Ending of the Blizzard, Cars Are Again Moving North Ogden Car in a Deep Drift Line to Preston to be Opened. The Ogden Valley car, which leaves Ogden at 11:30 a. m., was annulled today and the big car put to work on Washington avenue to aid in clearing the track of snow. It was not taken off because of serious difficulty in getting over the canyon line, but because be-cause it was considered imperative to keep up car traffic on the main city Hue. The canyon cars to Huntsvllle have succeeded in plowing through the deep snow during the storm and have been running only a little short of the schedule time. This morning they were about one hour behind time. The snow was reported to be 26 inches deep at power dam and about 30 Inches at Huntsvllle, considerable snow having fallen early this morning. morn-ing. In the city it began snowing heavily heav-ily at an early hour this morning and continued until about 11 o'clock, when tho wind subsided and the storm was over. The Twenty-first street car line was practically abandoned last night and was not opened until a late hour this morning. At the noon hour the car was being operated as far eaBt as Douglas avenue. The Twenty-third street line was in equally bad condition and 25 men were put to work this morning shoveling shovel-ing snow which had covered the snow plow and completely blockaded the track. In an effort yesterday afternoon after-noon and evening to operate the Twenty-third street car, the snow plow was derailed and the line for a considerable distance was burled in snow. While one of the cars yesterday yester-day was stalled, the snow drifted up to the window sills of the car. It is expected that car service will be back to normal this evening. This morning difficulty was encountered encoun-tered in moving the cars on north and south Washington avenue, tho snow drifting to great depth on the track. A car was stalled at Seventh street for a time. The North Ogden car, which runs out from North Washington, Washing-ton, is still in a bank of snow, in a cut just beyond North Ogden. No attempt at-tempt will be made to release it until service can be Improved in the center cen-ter of the city. M. J. Read, superintendent of transportation trans-portation for the Ogden, Logan & Idaho Railway company, telephoning from Dewey this morning, said that it had been impossible to break through the deep snowdrifts between Dewey and Mendon. He stated, however, that another effort would be made today to-day to get through, with a fair prospect pros-pect of success It is the opinion of the officers of the company that the loadbed can be cleared this afternoon. For tho last two days the track was covered with drifting snow as fast as men with shovels could remove tho snow. The heavy storm of this morning covered the tracks of the city with about four inches of snow and schedules sched-ules were disr.egarded on all lines. Twenty-fifth and Twenty-seventh seet cars made better headway than the other bench lines, but they failed a times to reach the eastern terminals In the early morning hours. |
