Gowans with a stimulating address to the young men on physical mnnhood in Its relation to parenthood and to success In' life. He was listened to with wrapt attention for he touched upon matters which all hoys need to know In order to avoid sex evils on the one hand and on the other quack doctors who prey upon the fears of young men often Inducing the very weaknesses they advertise to cure. At the close of the address, Principal Prin-cipal Henderson took occasion to thank Dr. Gowans, and to bear testimony testi-mony that fifteen years ago he had listened to a similar talk by the doctor doc-tor before a body of students in Logan, Lo-gan, and had been profoundly impressed impress-ed at the time, and helped pass the pitfalls of youth to a vigorous manhood, man-hood, for which he now expressed his gratitude. Whereupon Dr. Gowans arose and said: "I would rather at this moment feel that I had helped shape the lives of such men as Prof. Henderson than be the governor of Utah," on which sentiment sen-timent he was enthusiastically applauded. ap-plauded. The gold medal offered by Messrs. Cottle and Henderson of last year's graduating class to the winner In the school oratorical contest, was on exhibition ex-hibition at the devotional period this morning and may now be seen at the library. Nine contestants are entered enter-ed for this prize and the event, which was to have come off Friday night, January 30, has been postponed to Saturday night, February 14, owing to the fact that the speakers needed tfrne to prepare their orations. This morning D. D. Brown of this city presented a superb set of Dickens' Dick-ens' novels lo the student who shall, during the year, write (he best composition, com-position, conditions to be arranged by the teachers of English. The gift was formally presented to the school, after which Mr. Brown was asked to address the students. He referred to the fact that he had been among the first students to enter after the founding of the institution in 1888. Some of his children have since graduated grad-uated from the school, others are now In attendance. Mr. Brown's theme was the need of cultivated love, self-sacrifice and social so-cial service, and he pointed out this aspect of education as the gospel euro for the ills of mankind which lead to jails, asylums, and reformatories on tho one Bide, and to armies and battleships bat-tleships on tho other. oo |
