Show Cedar, Millard football contest named 4-State game of year The three hour and 15 minute, five overtime battle between Cedar High and the Millard Eagles this past fall has been selected by "Arizona Prep" Magazine as the Game of the Year for the Groat Southwest. Quoting from the magazine article it points out that "Kach season the "Southwest Sports News Service" dips into its bag of tricks and conies up with the wildest, zaniest game played in the Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah area. "....this year's cream of the crop was Millard 52, Cedar City 4(, in three hours, 15 minutes and five overtimes. "When games like that take place it's a clinch selecting the top game of the year. This part of the country isn't called the Wild Wild West for nothing, and the tw o Utah Schools established two all-time Southwest records during their marathon: number of sudden death overtimes and length of the game. "The defensive show ended at 20-20 after two hours of regulation play. Then the circus started, and it didn't finish for another hour and 15 minutes, and fH more points. It took five sudden death periods before the Eagles persistence paid off and when Millard sent Steve Condie four yards off tackle for the winning score the marathon finally came to an end. "Prior to the fifth sudden death the teams traded touchdowns in the first four extra periods; Millard finally held Cedar on the fifth sudden death try before scoring itself." The magazine when on to describe Cedar's game tieing touchdown with time running out in regulation time and explaining the new sudden death ruling implemented in Utah during the past season. |
